Default Defective Surface question

I have a strange question. My new Surface tablet started acting crazy were the touch screen was jumping all over the place and apps were just randomly opening back and forth. Amazon is going to exchange it for me but that is where the issue starts. I tried to do a reset to factory defaults to clean it before returning it, but during the process it locked up. Now it will turn on to either the screen that says Surface and sometimes it will also say preparing automatic repair but it never goes beyond that point. I have tried all the trouble shooting including booting from USB using a recovery drive but it does not do anything except give me one of those two screens. From a security standpoint what is my best option since I need to return this to Amazon and cannot wipe the drive at this point? Any ideas?

on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being "FML", how sensitive is the data on the device?

are you simply logged to all of your social accounts (fb\mail\etc)? or do you have work related documents \ personal photos?

+ did you try using a thumb drive to boot the device into some sort of "live" version of linux of any flavor and or ultimate boot cd\hiren boot cd ?

I would say 3. Really it is probably social media, mail, Microsoft account, and some online shopping but the shopping ones are not set to save passwords. Unfortunately I am not sure how to do some of the other suggestions you gave. I will have to research them. Thanks

Do you have access to a 4GB usb flashdrive and a PC?
Use the Media creation tool to download windows 10 and copy it to a USB drive.
Then Access the BIOS, set it to boot from the Windows 10 USB drive if it doesn't already.
Quote:
"If you want to get into the BIOS (actually UEFI) on a Microsoft Surface 3 Tablet follow these instructions

Power off the Surface – a reboot is not sufficient
Press and HOLD the Volume UP button (on the left side of the tablet)
Press and HOLD the Power button for FIVE seconds (on the top of the tablet)
Release the Power button after five seconds but KEEP HOLDING THE VOLUME button until your see BIOS UEFI"
You should get options to delete everything and clean install windows 10 you want.

I have tried this a few times but for some reason it will not work. The option screen never pops up. It just hangs at the Surface screen.

What option? The bios?
Did you set it to USB -> SSD?
Quote:
Configure Alternate System Boot Order
To choose the order in which your Surface boots, select Configure Alternate System Boot Order and select one of the following options:

SSD only
Network -> USB -> SSD
USB -> Network -> SSD
USB -> SSD
Network -> SSD
Quote:
Advanced Device Security
This option lets you disable ports and features you don’t want anyone to use. For example, you can disable the microSD card reader so no one can use a microSD card to copy data.

The current setting appears in bold. Select Advanced Device Security, and select the option you want:

Network Boot
Side USB
Note

Selecting Side USB disables the ability to boot from a USB device. The USB port remains enabled in Windows.
Disable Side USB if it's enabled.

How do I get to the UEFI settings?

The UEFI settings can be adjusted only during system startup. To load the UEFI firmware settings menu:
Step 1: Shut down your Surface.
Step 2: Press and hold the volume-up button on your Surface and at the same time, press and release the power button.
Step 3: When you see the Surface logo, release the volume-up button.
The UEFI menu will display within a few seconds.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I did adjust those bios settings to what you recommended and it was a no go on getting it to boot to the sub with the win 10 iso on it. I have not tried disabling the side sub yet

I just checked the bios and I do not have any options in the bios for side usb or even advanced device security for that matter.

I think it time to throw in the towel.
I doubt someone try to recover your data. You can always just change your password. Remove the PC from your Microsoft account. I think that will prevent that tablet from signing in.
