Thought we had a thread for this over in the Smartphones, Tablets and Handheld Computing forum. If not, should probably move this over there.

I propose we rename that to Mobile Computing or something and have the smartphones stuff in the description.

In which field/capacity?

I can see iPad's in some scenarios being useful. But for an iPad pro, it would need to be overwhelmingly better (outside of niche scenarios) to choose it over a Surface or similar tablet.

IPad are useful in some professional fields (I know many speech therapists use one, for example) -- other tablet platforms (including Windows, since professionally-oriented software for windows are not meant to be used in tablet) simply are useless for these purposes. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these people like to have larger iPads, especially since they aren't paying out of their pockets anyway.

The ecosystem for touch-optimized apps on windows is still rather limited. In much the same way that productivity on iOS is limited. We have hardware from both directions bridging the tablet/laptop gap, but the software has yet to catch up.

Fair point.

The flip side is, many really powerful applications are still not fully touch optimized. While Windows applications, for example, have a deficit in UI/UX optimizations to support touch for that environment, you still have the ability to not only use touch, but also a proper keyboard/mouse interface and not have any functionality drawbacks.

The surface and several other devices are incredibly capable.

In certain settings, with optimized applications, the iPad Pro will be quite useful, undoubtedly.

But it is still a niche product. Previous tablets were, for the most part, entertainment/consumption devices. Some enterprising developers took advantage of various features to make them amazing devices (the iPad 2 I think still has one of the lowest touch and audio latencies).

Great devices, but I don't see a large market outside specific pockets for the Pro.

The rumor is next year or the year after, Apple might move to Intel procs for the next Pro's so that could make things a lot more interesting from an app development standpoint, especially if Apple uses its resources to create a cool little wrapper

I'd love a larger iPad and the way I use them (replacing paper tech manuals and training material with .pdf) would benefit from the extra real estate.

A bunch of iPads and a charging cart is probably one of the best investments I've made.

If it can keep a 6 and 6 plus from getting bent it's probably worth it. I see so many I can't fix have to order new frame.

What a waste of money.
Apple fails big-time with this product, as it falls short of the Surface Pro 4 by a rather substantial margin.

It does seem kind of fail but I would be lying if I said I didn't wan't to handle one to see what its like. Supposed to be as thin as my ipad mini 4 thats insane. I almost want to snap my ipad in half its so thin.

I've played with one, it's too big for me to comfortably hold in my hands. I have to use a case-stand whether on the table or my lap. Which makes it basically a laptop minus keyboard. I felt the same about the surface pro 3 as well, although that extra inch of width makes things even worse.

That does IMO make the iPad Pro more niche since in terms of software it can't even claim to be a laptop you occasionally use as a tablet, instead it's just a tablet you occasionally use, unless you happen to have some professional touch software that isn't available on windows. But if something is going to be mostly a laptop anyway, I'd rather have a decent keyboard/trackpad, like the surface book or xps 12.

Outside of graphic design and a couple other niche areas, I don't see why anyone would ever get an ipad "pro" vs. the surface. It'd be a somewhat difference discussion if the ipad pro ran osx.

Exactly. As a CAD/CAM professional I could see a Surface Pro working very well for me, but not an iPad Pro. I've noticed a lot of posters online only think of artists when they say "professionals."

Which itself is a very niche case because there are better touch panels with better stylus input devices on the market.

The Pro is a decent product for specific use cases where applications have been designed for them in a particular way. Outside of that, it has major shortcomings when compared to a fully fledged tablet for the SAME PRICE, or less.

In a couple of years, when more accessories are out there, and more applications, things will be different. Today, you'd better have a damn good reason to buy one.

As a beginner 3D artist, I fail to see how an iPad Pro will be better than Surface 4. It feels so limited in power and the fact that you pay extra for a pen makes it even worse.

My co-worker is going to get a Pro. For drawing (he actually IS a visual designer) and... reading comic books.

That is one expensive comic book reader!
