Default Sony Mobile rumoured to develop in-house chips for Xperia devices

Quote:
Sony Mobile is considering the development of its own application processors for use in mobile devices, according to a report from DigiTimes. The report says that both Sony Mobile and LG plan to develop in-house chips, following on other manufacturers that already do this such as Apple, Samsung and Huawei.

If true, this could eventually mean a move away from Qualcomm and MediaTek as the two main chipset suppliers for Xperia devices to date. The report goes on to say that Global Unichip, the Taiwanese-based dedicated fabless ASIC provider, has won development orders from “Asia-based handset vendors”.

However, we’d exhibit caution on this rumour. Sony doesn’t have the buckets of cash that the aforementioned companies have when it comes to developing a class-leading chipset. Would this news worry about how competitive Sony could be? Would you prefer Sony to use the latest off-the-shelf chips from Qualcomm or MediaTek? Or do you feel, this is an important step for Sony to differentiate itself? We’d love to your thoughts below.

Hmm, as long as whatever is in their next handset is better thought out than the Xperia z3+ I'm all for it.

Crapdragon 810 is a stinker in terms of heat output.

How bad does 810 run? I thought they put some nice heatpipe to cool it down.

It runs better in Xperia z5 because they put a extra heatpipe in it, it's a good performing chip. However in the Z3+ which I own it often throttles reduces the screen brightness and sometimes games start to lag and run a lot slower.

Tis one of the first phones I've ever owned where I want to mod it so it runs cooler

Also it's upto the phone manufacturer to put heatpipes on the 810, not the chipset maker.

CellBE was a big chip on 90nm process...if Sony could make a 12nm or 14nm process CellBE it could work.

Chip fabs aren't cheap though. That's why Intel rules.
