Default Dawn demo works fine with Catalyst 3.6 and 3.7

ATI has removed NV_point_sprite OpenGL extension support from their drivers, starting with Catalyst 3.6.

So, the Dawn demo does not work, when you have Cat 3.6 or 3.7 installed.

The solution is:
Get Cat 3.5 somewhere, and copy atioglxx.dll (4.7Mb) to Dawn's BIN folder (where dawn.exe lies). This way Dawn will use ATI Cat 3.5 OpenGL engine, while all other apps will use whatever you have installed.

Tested with latest Omega (cat 3.7 based) on Rad9500 (dll hack to 9700), Win2000 SP4, DX9a.

I can upload the 1.6Mb archive with the stuff required for Dawn to work on radeon (including my updated wing and clothers remover) somewhere...

by any chance, can someone post a link to the cat3.5 ogl file here? If its just extracted out of the installer, its only ~2mb and doesn't work with the dawn demo, and I dont want to install cat3.5 just for this file.

If someone can email me the file .zipped, I can put it up on my FTP for everyone's convenience.

For those who want it, this is actually the .dll from Cat 3.6, but it works for me under both WinXP and Win2k (4x FSAA, 8x Aniso).

http://users.rcn.com/chinmonster/atioglxx.rar

EDIT: OK, since the consensus is that the Cat 3.4 driver is the best one, I've replaced the .rar file with the one from the Cat 3.4 driver set. Don't really notice a difference personally.

Does that mean you can use the 3.4 instead of 3.5 atioglxx.dll (4.7Mb) to Dawn's BIN folder?

Does someone care to explain this a little further? To start that atioglxx.dll is not 4.07 mb, it's just a little over 2 mb. I copied it to the Dawn bin folder and still get the same message when trying to start Dawn. And that file was never in the bin folder to begin with. Is the wrapper dll supposed to be removed?

I see now that in my driver folder, that atioglxx.dll is packed as it reads as "atioglxx.dl_"

That would explain why it's only 2.15 mb. So how do you unpack it?

OK, I figured how to unpak it. And yes Dawn demo now does work again with the 3.7s. (I ended up using the 3.4 version of atioglxx.dll). Cool.

Sorry for being silent for so long, I've been out of town for a weekend.

1. ATI installation asks where to extract drivers before copying them to %windir%/system32/drivers. You may click cancel after the end of extraction process, then go to this folder and find extracted atioglxx.dll there.

1b. You may just install 3.5, get the DLL from %windir%/system32/drivers, then uninstall 3.5 and install whatever you need.
This is not a virus spreading over all your HDD and computers nearby, and there is a drivercleaner for ATI/Nvidia drivers.

2. atioglxx.dl_ is packed version, you don't need this.

3. You can get the stuff somewhere in internet. There are search engines, you know...
You may also try sources like http://www.radeon2.ru/downloads/drivers.html
Access to this site may be slow from outside of Russia.

4. You need both the wrapper opengl32.dll, and atioglxx.dll from cat 3.5 (people say that 3.4 is even better) to make Dawn work on Radeons with Catalyst 3.7 installed.

The way I ended up doing was far easier than the way you just described.

1. I don't use the ATi installer to begin with (and even if I did, that folder would be showing the 3.7s, not the 3.5s). I just unzip the exe to a folder and install the drivers that way.

2. It's a bit crazy to go through the process of installing the 3.5s just to get that one file and then un-install the drivers again. It's an un-necessary step and a big hassle.

3. When unzipping the exe, the dlls come packed. It's a fairly easy process of either using the command promp to unpack (expand) whatever dl_ you want. Or you can use the msconfig.exe (expand tab) also to unpack a dl_.

4. I had to ask around on another forum how to unpack (expand) but once I got it pointed to me, it was pretty easy to do.

5. Yes I do know now that the wrapper dll stays in the Dawn\bin folder. I was a bit confused at first because I was expecting to see that atioglxx.dll in that folder thinking it was going to get over written. When I didn't see it, I thought for a minute that maybe the wrapper dll had to be replaced. After thinking about it some more I realized that couldn't be the case.

Or you can just simply right click on the .dl_ file and just select Open with Winzip.

Nope, that won't work. A packed file is not the same as a zipped file. You have to use the Windows unpacking utility to unpack (expand) it. Winzip wouldn't even recognize it.

Look at the size in Winzip. It's still the same size as it was (and it's still showing it as packed). Once it's unpacked it will be over 4 mb.

Are we looking at the same screenshot? I'm not sure what you're driving at. Of course it's still 2.25 packed, but look at the actual size of 4.911,104 reported for the file when uncompressed. This is the size of the .dll once extracted (this example is for Cat 3.7 I think).

Try it yourself. You can just drag and drop it from with the Winzip browser itself. It's simple and works fine without having to go through the command prompt or msconfig. That's just needless work.

Hmm. I will try it. When I had tried before I didn't have the option of opening with Winzip. I remember having a lengthy conversation in a forum awhile back when I was trying to get someone to explain the difference between a packed and zipped file. I was even called dumb when I was asking why Winzip couldn't expand a packed file. I kept being repeatedly told Winzip could not expand a packed file. Now you are showing me it can. I wish I knew where those dudes where who were telling me different.

btw, what version of Winzip are you using?

Can anyone detail the procedure of making the Dawn demo work w/ Omega v3.7 ? I tried with Cat v3.4, v3.7 and Omega v3.7 and none worked.

I'm currently using Omega v3.7. I tried putting the v3.4 atioglxx.dll in the dawn/bin folder, that didn't work. Tried copying windows/system32/opengl32.dll to the dawn/bin folder, that had no effect either. Can someone tell me EXACTLY what I need to do to make it run ?

While there at it, they should make a wrapper for us lowly R8500 users who would have a 9800Pro if they hadn't lost the money to a loser.
