Default EA is crawling back to EVIL VALVE/Steam

https://kotaku.com/ea-returns-to-ste...der-1839440326

Quote:
Just a few days after EA's steamy teaser, the publisher has made it official - EA is coming back to Steam.

EA is going all-in with the comeback too, kicking it off by opening Steam pre-orders for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order today ahead of the game's release on 15th November.

RIP PCGAMING!

They will still use origin though, so get ready to use a launcher to launch another launcher.

Gabe should implement a special 60% cut just for EA titles. If they don't like it they can go to Epic. That's right EA, now go home and get your shine box.

The Steam offered Ubisoft titles have already been like that for a while (i.e. uPlay launches in the back). I don't really have a problem with that.

I suppose Origin was worth a try, right?

For me, PC gaming is Steam & GOG. I'm not doing this Ubisoft/EA/etc. platform nonsense.

I hope this works out for them. EA is very capable of making good games. They just sometimes don't.

The "lack of microtransactions" being a selling point for a game is a good sign.

It would be hilarious if now Epic paid EA $$$++ to take their games off Steam and put on the Epic Games store.

I'd like to know the real reasons behind this change. Is Origin doing badly or are EA just happy to come back to steam now Epic are actively trying to reduce steam marketshare?

. Of course the reason is that they think they will make more profit by offering their games on Steam. Jedi is already a bestseller.

They gave Origin an honest chance to capture that 30% per game they were losing, but in the end they couldn't figure out how to capture the market that Steam has managed. They tried "On the House". They tried Prime monthly access. What they didn't try was making a competent storefront. For that, I guess it's cheaper to use Valve's than develop their own ( I know, not really, but I don't get why it seems so hard to accomplish).

They aren't getting rid of Origin, heck a developer on Steam stated that Origin is still required for Jedi Falled Order so that it can update the game, so updates won't even be happening through Steam, rather through Origin.

So yeah, fully expect it to be an origin key from your Amazon order.

Well yeah, but why now and not 2 years ago or 2 years into the future? By all accounts BFV did not sell well (half of BF1) and Battlefield II was down on their estimates, so maybe those are factors too.

Not possible. Valve/Steam aren't publicly traded. Gabe (and friends) owns it all.

I've never bought anything through Origin. Their prices suck and they never discount DLC even on ancient titles. The few games I have in my Origin library were $7 firesale physical media or promotion freebies. I only buy games during Steam sales so if you're not on Steam you're not getting my money.

It will pay for itself within a year, as EA's Steam will introduce lootbox and PtW for every game on steam.

Welp I suddenly get concerned over the future of steam, wonder what's gonna happen? What if a Chinese company bought steam, I have zero problem with such, but you Westerners OTOH... lmao.

I really think it's mostly that Valve was there first. People are used to using Steam. Some people are strangely stubborn about using anything else. Quality of store front, etc, it's all irrelevant. As long as Steam doesn't totally suck it really doesn't matter what features it has vs other stores. Of course, Steam probably is the best, but even if that weren't the case, I still think most would just use Steam out of habit.

So what happened to this? I haven't seen any new EA title on Steam so far or did EA think, nah we just stick to Origin after all.

Jedi Fallen Order is so far the only new one. I doubt they'll port their older games but I expect every new game will drop on Steam as well as Origin. They should really make Apex Legends available on Steam.

They are adding EA Access to steam this year (spring) so I'd wager every title is coming to steam at some point.

Electronic Arts and Valve have partnered to put EA games into the hands of the players on Steam. Starting next spring, EA Access—our ever-growing subscription service powered by great games and member benefits—will be making its way to Steam. EA Access is the first and only gaming subscription service available on Steam, and the fourth platform featuring an EA subscription.

The partnership kicks off with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order™ launching on November 15—and available for pre-order today. In the coming months, players on Steam will also be able to play other major titles like The Sims™ 4 and Unravel™ Two. Multiplayer games—like Apex Legends™, FIFA 20, and Battlefield™ V—will become available next year, and players on both Origin™ and Steam will have the ability to play together.

A library of titles awaits you in The Vault, but beyond the games themselves, EA Access enhances your gaming experience with a medley of rewards. Get the red-carpet treatment with exclusive catalog-wide discounts, and in-game member benefits for some of our biggest franchises.

Keep an eye out for more news and updates on this partnership in the coming weeks and months!
