Huge and scary. The damage to vehicles and buildings is insane.

Hopefully any other countries that have a big stockpile of fertilizer are making some changes.

seems often the casualties are often the firefighers unaware theres potential for a secondary blast. Looks like Ammonium Nitrate needs tighter control on storage / handling

I inspect places that store ammonium nitrate fertilizer. It's extremely controlled. This was likely ANFO.

I think people assumed it was all over with.

Who the hell stores that much ammonium nitrate in one place?

You inspect places here, in the West. Here ain’t there my friend. Not the most stable of political/economic/etc. climates, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that this really did get lost in the shuffle. There was some govt official, I forget the title, that had been writing letters and warning about this situation for years.

Yeah, some multi-millionaire/billionaire is sad that his mega yacht got sunk. Then again, if he wasn't on board, he might just be counting his blessings. If he was on board, well... (I suppose it's possible it was a small cruise ship. It definitely looks to have a small pool on the back end though.)

The overall damage is pretty crazy, and also terrible to see.

there are a lot of conspiracy theories that there was more there than just "innocent stuff" stored there, as well as why it was there for so long, and how the fire started.

one of the theories is that it was a secret weapons dump. sometimes when weapons caches go up the initial fires+mini explosions can look like fireworks, but im obviously not an expert.

Maybe I wasn't clear. I was just saying that I inspect the stuff and here it's really controlled on who gets it, where it's stored etc. I am not surprised this happened over there at all.

That's because this isn't the first time. There is literally a wiki page dedicated to Ammonium nitrate disasters

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammoni...rate_disasters

Last US incident was 2013 in Texas where 240 tonnes exploded. Which also has it's own wiki entry lol... West Fertilizer Company explosion.

Seems like this is the largest explosion of this type since about the 1950's in a populated area (1947 Texas City Disaster, 2086+ Tonnes & France same year, 3309 Tonnes)

The Texas City disasater explosion was so powerful it blew the ships anchor almost 2 miles away.

Quote:
A 2-short-ton (1.8-metric-ton) anchor of Grandcamp was hurled 1.62 miles (2.61 km) and found in a 10-foot (3 m) crater. It was installed at a memorial park. The other main 5-short-ton (4.5-metric-ton) anchor was hurled 1⁄2 mile (800 m)
