I'm not adding washers to it. The noise isn't that big of a deal to me, even at 3000rpm.

It wasn't stable at 924mv so it's back up to 950mv now. TD2 beta was rebooting the system until I set wattman back to defaults. So back to the drawing board there.

And as far as logic there isn't any in the sense in this. It's a 15-25% performance boost over my vega64 for a lot of extra money. I wanted a toy to play with so I bought it. That simple in this case.

Well as I said I eventually cancelled my Vega VII order and I'm thinking of buying an Asus Rog Strix Vega 64 (I think you owned one) for £389 and I can get £180 for my reference 64 but I get another 3 years warranty and a much quieter card to boot. That should last me until AMD Next Gen as I'm not really interested in Navi TBH. What do you think?

I have one of those rog strix, have owned many, and they are excellent cards. Hard to do better on air for a vega64. I have one for sale too. After this launch I think the value may have gone up haha!

RE: Radeon 7
So, one thing that I have learned is that while you can undervolt fine the fan curves are a waste of time. No matter what points I graph, when the temp hits 67c the fans ramp to 3800rpm and spin up and down from there. If I leave the fans on automatic they don't go over about 2600rpm. Core temps are higher however, at 75c.

I blame wattman. Regardless, other than the undervolt at 950mv, I'm leaving everything else alone for now. 75c is pretty warm but apparently well within design limits.

This would be the way to go. No sense in buying a new card of the same model.

Just saw that video and while stability is perfect now vs the beta driver they gave to the media itd be nice to see how auto undervolt works with the current 19.2.1 driver.

Games that are well threaded for cpus will outperf nvidia or come close to matching it. Going forward Ive little doubt the vegas will gain while the nvidia will topout. Nvidia uses up to 40% of an 8 core cpus perf for its software scheduler.

Don’t think that’s the reason considering there are multiple games that are very well multithreaded such as Assassins Creed and BFV where AMD gets smacked to next week.

Well theres well thread AND cpu dependant. How else can the r7 beat even the 2080ti in a couple instances.

Personally Im surprised nvidia went with a software scheduler again for RTX. Its either they cant do it in HW for IP reasons or having 2 types of schedulers is a driver nightmare.

Oh and in BFV its R7 winning:

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/...eon_VII/8.html

Kinda same old issue if its an Unreal enigne game nvidia wins and Frostbyte amd wins.

Played some more TD2 beta today. Currently, it is the only game I've tested. My thoughts summarized thus far.

1.Two problems I've had with the driver. Wattman soft locking and fan curves not behaving as expected. The former manifests in a way that I've not seen anyone else experience and may be specific to my configuration.
2. With an undervolt of around 100mv and the fans set to automatic core temps reach 75c and fans are audible at 2600rpm. This sound level is not ridiculous hair dryer loud. If you want a quiet system however, I can't recommend this.
3. The performance boost over a Vega 64 is noticeable. If you have a Vega 64 currently I don't think the performance increase is enough to warrant $700.

Short term plan is to leave the settings as-is and continue testing stability with the undervolt. When new driver revisions come out that resolve some of the known problems I may have another go at making some changes.

Yeh aside from Dirt, I was interested in why R7 does so well in BFV too. Perhaps bandwidth? It's a very bandwidth heavy game I would have thought. Either way, that's a big win for prospective R7 buyers over 2080 IMHO.

Sure it's an outlier, but it's a very respectable result none the less. Despite the hate, I happen to like BFV.

'Tis good to see. The noise though... Wouldn't be a problem if someone made a waterblock for it. EK sure isn't right now, the closest thing I've read of a possible ETA is 2 months.

Here's some interesting information....https://www.techpowerup.com/252475/a...y-tracing-edge

So Vega VII should now be renamed Vega VII Frontier Edition as it's a prosumer card you can game on. Given the poor performance of the drivers at the moment good luck with that.

If there's any doubt that AMD's Radeon division is a bunch of incompetent morons... Vega 7 BIOS lacks UEFI support so Secure Boot won't work:

Good job, guys. Give yourselves a hand.

They just released a fixed BIOS with UEFI but this in addition to the drivers reinforces the impression that this thing was rushed out the door several weeks before it was ready. No one knew about Radeon VII before the CES announcement so they could have easily pushed the date back without anyone knowing it was delayed https://m.hardocp.com/news/2019/02/1...n_vii_uefi_gop

I really wish reviewers would test DCS World in their suite of benchmarks. I am really curious how this card and it's 16GB of Vram would fair in DCS World in VR.

When you see byski and barrow blocks for 7 is when ek will have one soon. EK just licenses their block design these days anyway.

Before Nvidia's recent change, I would have said that Freesync was a reason to get Vega VII over 2080. But obviously now that's changed. I guess Nvidia finally realized they were just giving a gift to AMD by refusing to support Freesync. Gsync cost too much so the two alternatives weren't really on level ground.
