I loved Reach on the box.
I played through on 360 back in the day, but I found the game to be pretty stuttery and I didn't enjoy it as much as other Halo games. I replayed a couple years ago on xbone, and it's buttery smooth and I enjoyed it alot more.

That might be because effects like depth of field or even ambient occlusion don't scale with resolution on PC and practically dissapear in 2560 or 4k. I'm not a biggest fan of post process camera effects but those are clearly associated with modern games, also the miniscule AO doesn't help with the impression.

There are rebels and there are innovators. I'm a rebel. I play a rebel brain expert who's in rebelliance against conventional logic, who's in rebelliance against the world order. It's about rebelliance. And if that's not being an innovator, I don't know what is.

In "Black Fang" I asked - what if a rat could drive a bus? And what if it and its rat brethren took over and ate Parliment?

A lot of people say "Garth Merenghi? Doesn't he write that horror crap?" Well, you're an idiot, because my books always say something, even if it's simple like "Don't geneticaly engineer crabs to be as big as man". There's always a message or a theme.

Bunch of whiners, I played it at 1080, and it looked good.

I'm reading and thinking "Who the heck plays Halo for the graphics?"

Yeah I can live with mediocre graphics if the gameplay rocks. Sadly, Halo Reach really doesn't impress in that area either. Luckily I didn't pay anything extra for it. It came with the XBox Game Pass. Uninstalled.

Hey, Halo looked AMAZING in 2001!

In terms of graphical presentation for the time, here's my opinion:
  • Halo 1: Best looking game on any platform... set a high-water mark that was uncontested for some time.
  • Halo 2: Best looking console game at the time of it's launch. Featured bump-mapping & other shader effects, demonstrated that xbox could ALMOST keep up with PC graphics... or at least get somewhat close.
  • Halo 3: Graphically disappointing compared to other games out on PC & consoles, although gameplay made up for it... high-water mark for online gameplay on consoles at the time.
  • Halo Reach: Impressive for consoles, with lots of novel tech for the time, and I appreciated the dark & grainy art style. Stuttery performance detracted from the presentation & game-feel though. Plus, PS3 already had better looking games, like Uncharted 2.
  • Halo 4: AMAZING for xbox 360... Nearly next-gen quality coming out at the tail-end of the 360's life. Halo 4's graphics stand up surprisingly well in the MCC on xbone, with nothing but a resolution & framerate bump.
  • Halo 5: Massive disappointment. Too many graphical compromises to reach 60fps... would be forgivable if they hadn't cut the splitscreen multiplayer.

It's not whining though, the port of Halo Reach is borked with both gfx and sound that need fixing. Your game would look much better just by virtue of not being inferior to the console one in places.

Personally I don't care much and found the gfx good enough, I tend to turn off motion blur all the time and DoF half the time anyway. The purists though, and all the people who like cinematic effects seem to loose a lot, both the original developer vision and all the movie like feelz.

Last but obviously not least, the AO being thinned with res to the point of almost disappearing, the game looks much worse like any other would.

I did like the looks of Halo 4 I'll admit, and I haven't played 5 yet, but I shall stick by my plasma grenades and repeat "Who plays Halo for the graphics?"
