Default Just ordered Oblivion, quick question.

Just so I dont waste tons of time playing with the setting and finding out what will work, can I get some tips from you vets based on my specs what would be good settings to start with?

1280*1024, HDR, 2xAA, 16xAF, Sliders to the max, iPreloadSizeLimit (use the 1024 ram setting -- see tweaks thread), Self Shadows Off, Shadows on ground Off, Exterior Shadows set to 50% and I guess you are set.

Err, if you don't want to waste loads of time, just let it auto-detect your settings for you and then play.

I'd basically agree with that, unless by 'shadows on ground' you mean tree canopy shadows or anything like that. I'm guessing you mean shadows on grass though, which I'd certainly agree with, that setting takes a big hit for very minimal visual flair.

Canopy shadows add a lovely ambience, especially in forrested areas. I prefer it on, its worth the minor performance hit.

Stick with the higher resolution and the lower AA, AA will drop your framerate exponentially, resolution barely has an impact. You're probably OK with a card like that, but the 1GB of ram might become a bottleneck.

1 Gig is BARELY okay. I'd say it's the minimum for comfort in playing, but even then isn't really enough at all for maximum smoothness in play. I'm adding another gig myself.

It goes up to 1.3GB (peak system use) on my system. Its one of the games in which I see less hitching since going from 1GB to 2 GB.
Nowadays 2GB is becoming the norm for a PC gamer.

umm AA doesnt really have much of an fps hit with a x1000 card. If you have hdr and AA enabled I would run 2 AA. You will not really notice many zig zags at 2aa

I wouldnt put every thing at max. Leave the Fade options alone or lower

Hdr gives a big fps hit then bloom or off.

Yes, for the most part until you hit the invisible wall. Btw I got an X1800XT today also, it will be interesting to see the results compared to my 7900GT.
