Default Best audio player other than Windows Media and Winamp?

I don't like Winamp because the program starts up relatively slow. I just want something that starts up quickly when I click on an audio file in a folder (don't really care about playlists and that kind of stuff). Windows Media Player 10 I also don't like because it's sluggish (kind of slow load up times sometimes and it tends to drop the first second of a file).

I'm using the latest version of Winamp, and it only takes a split second to start up. I'm not sure what you're comparing it to that you consider it slow

http://www.fmod.org/ ( See the download section )
Nice little program that takes up hardly any space (403kb download), and it might use .2% of your CPU per song.

I like it.

Takes 3-5 seconds for me. O well.

Will try. EDIT: Is there any way to make it play a file automatically?

Yea, I gave fmod a go and liked it... but went back to Foobar as there's no autoplay. I've already manually set all the audio extensions in Windows to play it with fmod but it just loads up the program and does nothing until I click on the 'play' button. If they implement more features, I will definitely go back to using it but for now Foobar is still the best imho.

Widows Media Player can certainly drag a slow system down especially if you use visualizations. It can use as much as 50 -60 % of your CPU when enabled at full screen. Turning off those visualizations will lower your CPU usage to about 5% the same goes for your memory. Something to think about anyways. I never tried other programs to see where they are when it comes to resources though.

I don't think "fmod" was really designed to be a stand alone media player but more towards programs, videos, games, etc. where CPU usage had to be minimal especially when dealing with numerous sound files and such. If you haven't noticed you can actually play a few audio files at the same time and add a few more or delete them as your playing or stop them whenever you feel like it, all this time it's trying to use as little of your resources as possible. I believe the OpenGL benchmarking program called "GL excess" http://www.glexcess.com/default.asp is one example that uses this program.

If your interested in more options, why not swing by their forums and request them. You'll never know until you try.

I use QCD. It's sorta targeted at the winamp crowd, as it pretty much has all the features and then some (even a winamp skin). Only reason to use it over winamp is that it uses less system resources while running. 'Bout 1.5MB, 900kb when idle.

I also use QCD. It's a great media player that I found out about here. Lots of features I like and similar enough to Sonique that I was convinced to switch to it (Sonique seems like it's been dead in the water for some years now). I'm not really into Winamp. Haven't used it on my own PC for four+ years, and I don't really dig the way it runs on the other PC's I've tried it on.

Is there any way to remove this annoying bar in WinAmp: (I'm talking about the one that let's you control where the song is at)

It doesn't let you make exact adjustments in long songs (because you have to drag it).

foobar is the best that I have used. qcd and winamp 2.91 are close seconds.

Yes, I use Winamp 5.08 lite with the classic skin and startup is instant. Also make sure you disable things like winamp agent.

Use Media Player Classic.
It can be found in Free Codecs (google it), and its way way better then Winamp/WMP.
Its light, allows you control all the filters, and have lots of options.

Its like the Firefox of the browsers :P

I just tested a few out.

In terms of cpu and memory usages best to worst.

1. Quintessential - only 2 megs ram (minimized) and loads fast CPU usage 0-1%
2. Itunes 4.5 - 5 megs ram loads a bit slower CPU 0-1%
3. Media Player classic. 8 megs ram, 1-2% cpu usage, loads fast

So far Quintessential seems to offer the best combo of fast load times, low ram usage and very low cpu usage. I play mp3s in background while I online game so I use the player that uses the least in terms of cpu cycles.

Thanks for the comparison! I never actually thought about that. Good to know there is another reason for me to use QCD besides the fact that I like it's design.
