Definitely at the stage where backdrops can be done real time and they're able to trick the eye. I'm just waiting for virtual actors.

Very cool. Not really sure why the VR unit is necessary though. Could easily be done with standard computer setup since the director is the one who is ultimately calling for the object placements.

Easier than being able to film in any time of day or weather conditions, and switch locations on the fly, without ever leaving your soundstage?

Actually, there is some kind of labor law that if filming is required at locations that are 30 minutes or more away from the studio they have to pay the film crew more money for travel expenses. It's why you see a lot of the same locations used over and over again in Los Angeles in film and TV shows.
