Default Xbox One - News and Info

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/a...qZnXfc.twitter

"In what might be the most dramatic reversal in the gaming industry, Microsoft is reportedly changing course on many of the concerns related to the Xbox One. These include a 180 degree shift on used games and online requirements."

http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/update

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

well at least there were smart enough to listen, instead of being bull headed.

and people who defend the policy look foolish now, even microsoft now admits it was a stupid move.

Too late. 360/ps3 was likely my last console generation. We'll see though.

So all the good that came with there original plan goes right out the window.

Why not give users both options. Let those that prefer to run the games off the disc w/o tying a license to there account do it that way and those that prefer to tie the license to there account can then use there account to run games.

Requiring physical media is DRM just the same as account based.

Looks like it, that is a shame.

I could have lived with that being the only feature that required the 24 hour check, since it is prone to abuse.

It's not actually.

I was trying to explain this to folks. The way this was engineered it was either one way or the other.

This also means that some other unannounced stuff is most likely scrapped. I'm fairly certain that the stuff I had worked on is most likely shutdown and those folks will be out of jobs now.

Well I didn't expect that. I thought that Xbone would stick to the DRM stuff and then eventually Sony would follow. Guess they got enough bad feedback from numerous sources and decided to change. Looks like there will be a war next gen. The price and kinect are the only sticking points now.

Your Feedback Matters ? Update on Xbox One
Don Mattrick, President, Interactive Entertainment Business
posted June 19, 2013 at 2:00 PM

Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.

For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games ? After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today ? There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.

We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.

Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year."

I'm actually bummed by this...

What I'd really like to see is both Microsoft AND Sony to show *real* incentives for direct download users. Sony is guilty of this in PSN now in that full games cost almost the same as retail 99% of the time (except outside Plus). Come on Microsoft, come on Sony -- show us $30 direct download games (and I mean *new* games, not greatest hits stuff), and you will get a following for digital sales in the next generation of consoles in 2020.

You never know if that steam leak is true and it becomes possible to share digital games in steam then maybe Microsoft will have to do another 180 and enable that feature again

I didn't see anything mentioned about the kinect though without the system being connected online many of the fears will be gone, it still begs the question on if it's required for the system to function or was that also just another thing that was being forced on end users.

Wow - moving those posts didn't work out too well on my part.

Let's use this thread for any news related to MS's DRM change.

Yep - done deal...

No more Family library, and no access to games everywhere - which for me me were two great features, said they may still come later down the road.

So what are all the haters gonna hate on now? The $100 more price tag?

If that unnanounced stuff was so amazing that everyone would've been happy with the anti-consumer DRM, they should have announced it. Without announcing it, there's no reason anyone would think this new announcement is anything but good news.

I am truly skeptical that there was anything "unannounced" that was so amazing that it would make consumers ok with the DRM that ms proposed.

Well, as someone who vastly prefer the layout of the 360 controller I'm glad that they listened.

It is a shame that they could not find a way to keep the sharing, I could have lived with with a connectivity check on those features.

Pretty much now the only real difference is the price, feature set and the exclusives between the PS4 and Xbox One.

Well for me it is, I believe the Xbox One had a better showing overall at E3, with better exclusives, and it does everything the PS4 does with the added Kinect & TV features - for me that's well worth $100 extra, which I was OK with before they changed policy and am still OK with now.

I do however lose 2 of the features that I would have probably used, so overall I am going to get less than I was yesterday for the same price...

If MS had an ace in the hole, the should have stuck to their guns. Granted, that's hard to do without consumer trust.

That's the problem. People didn't want the connectivity check. The check was to make sure that the title was still owned by the original disc owner.

That means the check needed to happen while either the console was on or in the low-powered mode. That's the big thing people were so angry about and wouldn't let go of.

This kills a ton of future features related to account based verification as opposed to disc based verification...a ton of them.

Victory for consumers, common sense prevailed
Not at all. Several consumer directed features were just cut today...and a ton of consumers lost their jobs. Contractors/employees are consumers too.

I didn't of course since my work was already done...but other people working on those future features have had their jobs wiped out since they are no longer needed.

I would think / hope, that it can be done with digital downloads as they are account bound anyway - I don't see why that wouldn't work. If that is the case I'll be going digital download primarily anyway - I don't have any shelf space left for game cases with 150+ 360 games already taking up that space.
