Default Hmm, I have a question about this Twitter stuff

I am not well versed in this twitter stuff. I started up a twitter account oh, around December 2017, I think. I have been using it just to ask questions to various game developers or commenting on their posts. I don't use it for my daily stuff or anything.

Anyways, for the last week 2 different game development studios have "followed" me. 1 followed me after I asked a question, the other development studio I have never heard of before.

is there any particular reason about Twitter why a couple of game development studios would want to follow me when all I have is various questions to other game developers? I'm just trying to think what they would get out of it.

I don't mind they are following me, it was just unexpected.

I'm not much up on Twitter either (have an old account I never use) and the only thing I can imagine is based on some marketing classes I have taken regarding followers and whatnot. Maybe they are fishing for you to follow them (if you haven't) as a response or perhaps there is something they can gain from it - but I am aware that a company or individual's followers is a big enough deal that people will pay money for fake follows to boost their status.

You're probably referring to indie studios and it's not uncommon for them to follow fans. They're trying to get a follow back and many would stop following you after a week or so. It's basically advertising, bringing their game to more eyes. There are so many indie games these days so it's a battle to be recognized.

Sometimes it is for follow backs, but I think that people following each other also have different message settings, so I think some support twitter accounts will follow so they can message you through DMs instead of publicly.

I think this is it. I see companies asking for complainants to "follow" so they can DM them.

Yeah there is definitely DM spam, and also just following people can raise awareness to their product as people usually click on the twitter page and have a look (maybe click some videos/pictures).

Companies on Twitter will follow random users so you know of their existence. It's a form of advertising. Just set your account to restricted so you have to approve any follows and block those that request you as a form of advertising.

ah, ok. I didn't think about the advertising side of things in following me. That makes sense.

Right now I only had 2 Twitter accounts follow me, and they are the only 2 followers I have, so I won't block any following just yet since it is not annoying.

Who knows, perhaps one day a developer will follow me and I find out about a game I didn't know about before and it will be something I will want to play.
