Default GTA 3 Slowdowns

Yes, I know this has been mentioned a lot, and I have done a search, but even after trying the tweaks I still get slowdowns, especially after a while of playing.

My system is Windows XP Professional, Radeon 9700 Pro, 512 Ram, Athlon XP, etc.

Not stutters, btw, just fps drops. The game is very smooth, but at some point, especially when driving fast in a car or when it is raining, the fps drops come and go, starting after 6 or-so minutes of playing.

The game originally stuttered a lot because of the CD Rom load, so I tried this fix:
http://www.ipfreelytech.net/gta3fix/

And it worked, but my new problem now started occuring.

I have trails set to off, visual themes in the gta3.exe disabled (windows 98/me compat. mode won't work due to the no-cd fix, it produces an CD Rom error on startup), tried to defrag, with no luck.

Any more suggestions?

how desperate are you?, disabling AGP texturing or putting your AGP apetrture very small in the bios should help

GTA3 doesn't have any option to switch Triple Buffering on, hence the big jumps in framerate. GTA:VC and Midnight Club have the same issue, just not so pronounced because they got the engine running faster for those games.

Turn vsync off (which unfortunately gives you a torn image, but framerate doesn't drop so much), or switch the in-game frame limiter on (which... sucks).

I don't understand why this would help, could you explain?

I have a 9800 Pro and these are the settings I use for GTA 3 and GTA: Vice City.

**GTA3 & GTA:VC**
Vsync: On
Frame Limiter: On
Draw Distance: 7
Trails: Off
Resolution: 1280x960

AA: 4x
AF: 8x Performance

I'm not using any Radeon tweakers like RivaTuner or Rage3D. I also have not configured any system files.

In GTA:VC, everything is fine and dandy except when I encounter fog/smoke in places like the strip club and during the Bank Robbery mission when the SWAT team throws in the gas grenades. There are no glitches but the frame rates drops significantly. I've noticed that the report has been listed on the Catalyst thread.

As for GTA3, there are no slowdowns but I see some texture glitches once in a while that I did not see when I used to play that game with my GF4 Ti-4200. Therefore, I think the problem, at least for me, is Catalyst driver related in GTA 3. I thought it could've been caused by my overclock but that is the only game that has the texture glitches. Other games like Splinter Cell, Unreal 2, Raven Shield does not show texture glitches.

Also, my driver installations are from a clean, no videocard-driver-state using an Norton Ghost image.

GTA3 - With AA & AF enabled, there will be periodic slowdowns after playing the game for awhile. All drivers and patches tried so the game's engine is probably at fault here.

GTA3:VC - The gameplay is just bloody awesome with AA & AF, even at high res. Finished the game twice without any performance hit or crashes.

Bottom line: Ditch, throw away or burn that copy of GTA3 copy you have and just play Vice City. Its so much more superior in every way!

Because it's a badly-designed game and does things which work fine on old nvidia cards, but cause appalling slowdowns on more sophisticated hardware if AGP memory is enabled. Disabling AGP memory disables those features on ATI and other cards, and therefore it all works happily just like an nvidia card that doesn't support them in the first place.

Fortunately Vice City appears to have fixed that particular problem.

Except as a game: I'm not sure why, but I found GTA3 far more fun as a game than Vice City. Maybe it's just that it wasn't much of an advance over the previous version so felt like a letdown after the hype.
