Default Here's how to block AOL IM Ads and sound, etc.

I know there was a topic about this a while back but you can't search for "block aol im ads" (to small of terms).

Found this on a site last night and it worked for me. Also FYI, I have a netgear wireless router which allows me to block sites, so I've block these sites as well. Kind of a double wammy. So if you have a router and can block sites and don't want to mess with your local host file then try that first.

Quote:
WARNING: There is a chance that if the instructions are not followed correctly this could mess up your computer. By choosing to continue you are accepting the following agreement:

I (your name) agree that in the event that I mess something up with my computer I will NOT hold Ender responsible. I choose to follow this procedure on my own accord. By reading the procedure I agree to abide by this WARRANTY.

(Also it?s for XP Home cuz that?s what I have. It may be different for other OS's and Ver.)

Ok enough of that stuff here:

1. Start>Run>C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
2. Select "Select the Program from a list" click "OK"
3. Choose Notepad click "OK"

It should look something like this:

example wrote:
# Copyright (c) 1998 Microsoft Corp.
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP stack for Windows98
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
# For example:
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost

(Note your hosts file might not look exactly like this. don't panic its ok)

4. Now add the following info:

127.0.0.1 ar.atwola.com
127.0.0.1 empiremovies.com
127.0.0.1 xlonhcld.xlontech.net
127.0.0.1 VTOT.proxy.aol.com
127.0.0.1 ads.web.aol.com
127.0.0.1 ads.aol.com

Make sure its 2 lines after the 127.0.0.1 localhost entry.

the finished product MIGHT look like this (different OS ver. look a little diff.):

What it does do is redirect the local computer from going out to the internet to get the ads and back to your PC (127.0.0.1 is localhost). Since you don't run an ad server, it won't run any ads on AIM. The only downside I can see is that if you ever want to go to any of these sites, like empiremovies.com, then you won't actually get there - it'll try to go to your PC and then fail.

All it does is prevent the DNS resolver from resolving the proper IP addresses of the ad servers, which prevents the AOL IM client from downloading the ad content. Meh.

Well Trillian runs nice here 24/7, accounts on AIM/YIM/MSN/ICQ/JABBER and irc.
Replaceing M$ IE.
Instant translation to any language and back.
No poppups, no ads.
Support for the most IM fetures, and more.
Checks my email acc. on yaho/msn/pop3.

Do you get more out from any other IM soft ??

Yep, I left it out because that plugin never worked for me here.
But, the world time displays the local time to my contacts,
and the calendar keeps all the dates, and notes.

If I would run all the IM-s separet my small server would crash

Well it's already survived having a piece of 'software' from AOL installed on it so why not go for 2 out of 2?

Default i prefer....

First, right-click on the AIM icon in your system tray and exit. You cannot remove the ad banner while AIM is loaded in memory.

In your AOL Instant Messenger directory, open aim.odl using Notepad. Find the section that appears as below:

on_group(5)
{
load_ocm advert required
}
on_group(11)
{
load_ocm advert required
}

This is the code that loads the advert.ocm file. Simply place a semi- colon in front of the load_ocm lines, and the buddylist ad is disabled. The semi-colon "comments out" that line of code, so that AIM ignores that line. Here is what the new code should look like:

on_group(5)
{
; load_ocm advert required
}
on_group(11)
{
; load_ocm advert required
}

Save the file and start AIM. The ad banner will be replaced with a blank gray area.

Just tried your way and it's failed to work for me. I'm still getting flashing ads. I went into my personal AIM folder and removed the cache and crap too and it didn't matter.

Please note I tried this at work since my original post worked fine for me on my home PC's.

I see this should work so I'm going to give it some time. I'll report back later today on my progress.
