I'll look if it's a big game or one that actually has a decently thick manual, otherwise not really.

none of the newer games I have, I browse through them during installation but many aren't worth reading, COD 4 manual is quite possibly the worst manual I've seen for a PC game in quite some time, even Half-Life 2 had the guts to say it was a damn quick reference card, cod 4 manual is just a pos.

Depends on the game. If it's something as sophisticated as any Civilization game, then yes, I'd defitely read the manual. Otherwise, I hardly ever read them.

For consoles almost never, they almost always have a tutorial system in place that gradually teaches you everything you need to know.

I did have to flip through the Assassin's Creed manual a few times as I got confused about a few aspects of the game. Same deal with Lair.

I miss the old days when you got a huge printed manual, cloth maps, quick reference guides, catalogs, posters, coupons in the box

No, I figure it out as I go. Most games all have sort of a learning mission anyway.

Of course, after I get done playing it I'll later find out something new that I could have used but never knew it was possible.

I always read manuals from cover to cover. I'm not afraid I won't be able to figure things out, since I've been gaming for a long time, but I actually just enjoy reading. I even read all of the stuff on the back of the boxes, lol. I do all of that before even touching the game, as it seems to build my anticipation for playing.

And yeah, it sucks if a game only comes with a PDF file for a manual (though that's mostly with PC games).

Hah, my Forza 2 didn't even come with a bloody manual. Most manuals these days are terrible, unlike classics such as Gunship! on C64, Wings on Amiga, that contained a whole host of technical information, histories, etc.

Hell, even Wing Commander 3 came with decent material.

If there's something interesting in it like a back-story or something I'll read it, but normally the manual doesn't even leave the case.

Sometimes I do. Whether or not I read it depends on two (2) factors.
  1. The complexity of the game.
  2. The amount of backstory and/or lore the manual contains.

Ideally speaking, a game shouldn't need a manual.

That said, oddly enough, I'll often take game manuals to read in the bathroom

I tend to read manuals to get more info on the game, the controls i rarely read, but I remember wipeout games used to go int ogreat detail's in the manuals about the team's history as with the track's, silly things like that i find interesting

I dont read them anymore(on the consoles), 99.99% are just a 2 page backstory and a page with the default keys.

On the pc I still read them, as you can still get the oldschool 100+ page manuals when you buy certain games.

Back when manuals used to be part novel part credits part HUD layout / controls, I used to read them. Since the "part novel" part is rarely present anymore these days, I rarely read the manuals anymore. I flip through them the first time I open the box, that's about it usually.

Nope. Unless my wife drives home.. then I will from time to time. 95% of the time I never open it up. I dont see the need. Most games have some sort of tutorial you can do, and some even force you to do so. Such as Assassins Creed. They make you do everything.. so annoying.

Which is part of the reason why I buy PC games on steam. I dont care for the boxes or manuals. I used to, but Ive got boxes from years ago. I need to throw them out, but Im a pack rat. I keep on thinking some day Ill need them, or sell the game and the person would want them. But they're several years old, and not worth much anymore, if anything. They just sit in a closet, collecting dust. No more boxes/manuals for me if I can help it.

Back when they were actual manuals, with the keys layout an stuff,

lol remember the space shuttle one haha, http://www.tomheroes.com/images5/RTM...ceShuttle4.jpg

now i dont bother reading em much unless it's an rpg game or has lot of information on the game an not just telling me stuff like how to switch options,

eg the forza 2 collectors, developers info on when they were making the game, the mass effect, smaaaall novel/info on the aliens/tech etc.
