Since it's called a 9600, it's safe to assume that it will be faster than the 9500 Pro but slower than the 9700 Pro.

How about the Radeon 9800? Will it cost around $250?

I don't think so...

The Radeon 9600 Pro will be priced in this range, while the 9600 will be priced even slower in the sub 200 range. All Radeon 9800 and 9800 Pro should be priced @ $300+

No, ATI has said that the model numbers are only valid within the same generation of cards, all cards beginning with 9xxx being counted to the same generation.

Also why ATi renamed the Radeon 8500 to Radeon 9100.

lol, jeez guys so serious on this one eh...
anyway, it was just a sarcastic ass little comment. i realize the whole 9xxx generation thing...just seemed funny b4 the 9100 came along thats all

but i do wonder what ati will change in the 9600 to make it faster than the 9500p and slower than the 9700, still holding the appropriate price differences. they have quite a few cards already, it may get tedious if the changes to the cards aren't a little more drastic. of course some will disagree, but i think that there may be more cases of ppl regretting what they buy cause they are either not educated on what to look for or just dont wish to take the effort into finding out...
imo

Personally I think rv350 will be 4x1, but this will be compensated somewhat by higher clocks, and faster memory. It should comfortably beat the 9500, but will struggle against the 9500pro IMHO.
The standard 9600 should soon fall quite low in price, and, if the peeps here can work out how to defeat any clock locks, should be quite a bargain.
And using the model numbers as a measure of speed can't be wise - they're set by the marketeers, who have no logic.

Probably the same reason we have a Geforce4MX among us
