Default Guillemot Maxi Gamer Phoenix graphics card - Voodoo Banshee - 16 MB Series

For some reason, this just popped in my head. I now remember my first graphics card.

My 1st card was a Trident 8900C. As all previous machines had "integrated" graphics by today's terms.

1MB and full VGA was an amazing jump from CGA or green/orange monochrome.

I actually hope intel does well in the discrete market. I miss the days of 6+ major chip makers.

an ATI mach something was my first video card.

My first 3d capable card was a voodoo 1. Still have it, still works I imagine, at least it did when I packed it up.

Mine was the Intergraph Voodoo Rush:

I remember when I got it, most a lot of games didn't work with the drivers that came with it. So I needed to download updated drivers. I didn't even have the internet at the time.

I think it took like an hour to download the drivers (which tied up their phone lines). I don't remember how big the file was. But it was a 14.4kbps modem. I assume it fit on a floppy disk, because I don't remember how I got the drivers to my PC.

I think my first video card was also a Trident.

However if we're talking a 3D accelerator then it was the Voodoo 2. Im not 100% sure about the brand, but I think it was a Diamond Monster 3D II. If I recall correctly you had to pass the monitor signal from the standard graphics card (the Trident) via a d-sub plugged into the Voodoo 2's input, and then connect the monitor to the Voodoo2's output. I actually bought a Voodoo Rush, but it ended up failing after only a couple of days. Fortunately, I was able to return it to the small computer shop I purchased it from.

If we're talking graphics card being both a 3D accelerator and a normal graphics card, then, hmmm... I think it might have been a TNT 2 Vanta. Actually it might have been the Voodoo 3, but I only had that a couple of weeks before it broke (I think it broke; maybe I just returned it because I was unsatisfied). Damn, I had some really bad luck with graphics cards. I don't even think I was overclocking back then. In fact, I'm not sure if you could overclock those cards. I remember some young (but older than me) woman at the computer store gave me **** because I kept returning stuff that had stopped working. (Yeah the Pentium III 700 might have been broken by overclocking , could also just have been bad luck though ).

At some point I had an ATi Rage Fury, and eventually I got my first Radeon 64 MB. From there on out I used nothing but ATi/AMD cards up until they became uncompetitive and the 1000 series forced me to switch. I don't think I ever owned a GeForce card up until that point.

Man, where has all the time gone.

The first system I actually built had a Creative Labs 3D Blaster Banshee 16mb AGP. I bought it because it was combination 2D/3D card (unlike the other 3dfx cards excluding the horrible Voodoo Rush) and was actually faster than a Voodoo 2 (due to clockspeed) when multitexturing wasn't being used (Banshee was based on the same architecture but only had 1 TMU whereas Voodoo 2 has 2 TMU's).

The other older cards I had were as follows (oldest to newest with the v770 replacing the Banshee):

-Diamond Viper v770 Ultra 32mb AGP (TNT2 Ultra)
-Hercules 3d Prophet DDR-DVI 32mb AGP (GeForce 256)
-ATI Radeon ViVo 64mb AGP
-ATI Radeon 8500 64mb AGP
-ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128mb AGP

Intel

My first PC graphics card (not counting C-64, amiga, atari before PC) was a Diamond Stealth 2Mb VRAM on a Pentium 90Mhz, it had one of those weird SIS motherboard that was somekind of cludge upgrade from a 486's motherboard . With the power of Gravis Ultrasound MAX, General MIDI in TIE fighter or DOOM never sounded better.. (still sounds ok).

Oh the RAW power of this 90Mhz beast, I could listen to MP3 in mono 44khz or stereo 22Khz in windows, of course not both..

Thats the way to the memory lane

My first card was a Trident...something.
Sucks ass, or just plain basic and was there to make the screen show stuff.

I remember playing Warcraft TWO and one day there were these blue lines that showed up anywhere that was dark (so the blackness of the fog of war it was most visible). Got it replaced at the computer store with...some other generic trident VGA card I think.

I didn't learn about 3d graphics stuff until I got me an ATI Rage Pro

Wow, my first non integrated card was also a Trident something or another. Then a Mach64 with empty sockets for upgradable VRAM that eventually got paired with some sorta vodoo card I got second hand.

My first graphics card (and first PC hardware change ever) was the one I added to my parents Compaq Presario in 1998. I wanted to play Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Tomb Raider.

It was a Voodoo 4 4500 PCI. Did the job well enough, and held up for the most part until I built my first computer in January 2000.

Nope. The Voodoo 4 4500 didn't even release until September 2000. For perspective, the Voodoo Banshee (based on Voodoo 2) was not released until late 1998.

They bought the computer in 1998, and I didn't get the card right away. I'm stretching way back in my crappy memory without looking anything up. Pretty confident that was my first card. Maybe I didn't order the parts until later December 2000, and built my PC in January 2001. It's a bit cloudy.

Could it have been a Voodoo3? Those were out in '99.

That is a long time ago though. I remember I had a Voodoo2, but at some point I had other cards. I owned an ATi Rage Fury at one point. Never owned a GeForce until the last few years, but I can't remember if I possibly owned a Riva TNT or TNT2 at some point. I did own a TNT2 Vanta that I resold (poor performance), but I can't remember if I owned any other TNTs. Between the Voodoo2 and when I got my first Radeon 64 MB it's all sort of cloudy for me.

Voodoo 3 3000 for me. Not sure why I wanted that to be my first graphics card, but I did. I severely coveted the Voodoo 5 when it came out but 3DFX died before I could afford it. This is what led me to ATI and their 8500 which purportedly sharpened those blurry solid lines on the road in NFS: Porsche Unleashed with this thing called anisotropic filtering.

My first card was a Trident, then my first 3d card was a 3d Rage 2. I don't get the hate for the Voodoo Rush, from people who never even owned one, i had one at the time, people that came over changed their tune when they watched me play Unreal on my 27 inch TV through the TV out, not to mention the sound through my Hi-Fi system at the time... Memories.

You mean besides being a complete mess of a card whose issues are well documented? Yeah I guess I can't understand it either. /s

All I can say is my Voodoo Rush only lasted a week before dying. Also it seemed kind of weak from my memory of the brief time I had it. Voodoo2 had much better performance.

The Rush was definitely a bad card on the initial release (and for most of it's shelf life). 3dfx made it better with driver adjustments later in it's life but it was too late by then. I had skipped the Rush card, thankfully.
