Like many (all?) of the other video entertainment formats, VR wont ever really take off until the porn industry can figure out how to consistently and efficiently profit from it, and yes that's coming soon.

Agreed. While I don't think it's dead, there are definitely a few things that need to fall in place for it to start picking up pace. Hardware profitability,, games, and hardware speed (easier to get good framerates).

I think it just comes down to figuring out how to deliver an accessible quality experience to the mainstream consumer crowd. Right now that does not really exist, apart from maybe PSVR but that still has a relatively small attach rate considering the amount of PS4's that have been sold (I think its something like 3 million PSVR units compared to 85 million PS4s).

Rumors have been floating around saying how Sony is building the PS5 from the ground up made for VR, and it will be totally built in. That might do it, but then again there's also rumors that it will be much more expensive at launch than the PS4 was, and we all know a big part of why the PS4 had a big jump on the Xbox One at the start of this generation was the price difference.

Its all about figuring out how to make it accessible to the mainstream. Needs to be affordable to everyone, easy to use, and have a killer app.

My biggest gripe with VR is the wires and setup, feels somewhat like a chore to set it up, where as playing on the TV you hit the power on button on the controller and your off and away.

YES, PC gaming is dead! It's been dead for 30 years now, can't you tell...

Really we have to have another one of these threads, one about every year or two...

Miners drove up the GPU prices to ridiculous levels. I am 3 series behind and am discouraged by the ridiculous pricing to upgrade. GTX 1070s have been out a while and are still $400 - $500. You want top of the line = $700 - $800. GPUs aren't really priced for gamers anymore. I just bought a PS4-Pro last December for $360 and gave up on it. It makes me sad.

There were some reasonable deals over black friday and stuff, and while the mining has definitely kept the price of GPUs up... I think video card makers have realized that people will pay it. It started before mining was so big with the double GPU cards approaching $1000..... now instead of the high end segment being $400-500, it's $700+, so "midrange" is $300-500, and lower end gaming cards are below that. It's definitely somewhat inflated from what the price could be, but there is stock available in most cases, so it's not quite the squeeze we saw a year and two back.

The featureset improvement of new cards is almost nothing, though, aside from experimental tech. So running a 900 or even 800 series nV card, while substantially slower, really doesn't hinder the use of effects, and something like a 970 is still good enough for 1080p 60fps at high settings for many new titles, just with higher framerate monitors and higher resolutions, it can no longer keep up.

PC gaming is doing great, though. We've never had such a large library of excellent titles at such bargain prices, and there's slightly increasing cross platform titles, so while there are big name console exclusives, everything else eventually comes to PC and works a hell of a lot better (terrible ports aside, which are certainly fewer than they used to be). It's not exactly a land of milk and honey, but there's a solid presence and such a gigantic library to choose from, plus dozens of decent new titles ever week.

PC gaming is not for kids. High costs and refined, obscure, high quality PC titles are happily keeping PC gaming where it should be.

I can't remember how many times we've had this conversation but I'm sure we'll be having it many more times in the future.

Obviously a lot of this is subjective but as somebody who plays 80 or so games a year I feel I am still drowning in quality titles.

Something like DCS World where I have around 500 hours I still feel like I'm only scratching the surface with some modules and still have much more to learn.

On top of that I treated myself to a Vive and while it has many shortcomings VR is still an amazing experience which I'm sure will only improve as developers learn to better exploit it.

Not only is PC gaming still alive and well but I'm pretty sure it will outlive me.

That's also KAC's issue. He plays so many games via different platforms (I don't know how adult folks spend that much time gaming) that he's basically burnt out on what's being offered today.

88 games last year, 74 YTD. That said, that includes a lot of indie titles which weigh in at only a few hours.

The perks of being semi-retired with no family to make demands on my time.

Yeah, no family responsibilities or a full time job/career will net you a ton more free time to spend on yourself.

Or, you know, just neglecting your wife and kids would help a lot too.

I have no wife/kids, but have a lot of hobbies and obviously work. I still have a ton of free time. I think I've been playing games too much the past month and completed 4 games. Uncharted 3, Uncharted 4, Uncharted Lost Legacy, and The Last of Us. A long holiday weekend in there, burning some leftover vacation time, and home due to some health problems, so more time than usual. In the summer when it's a bit busier for me, I complete 1 or 2 per month on average.

Being retired helps even more, but I'd go nuts sitting that much.

I have wife and 2 young kids that all demand lots of attention, and a busy job. Good thing for me I guess is I only really have one hobby, gaming (and retro collecting). So I'm able to still find sufficient time to enjoy it.

Must say though along with all the other factors mentioned, having less time is also a contributing factor to why I don't play as much PC games anymore. For me (as you know) retro gaming just fits my lifestyle so much better these days. Those old simpler console games are so much more time efficient. I can pack much more satisfying gaming into an hour where as with PC gaming, I feel like sometimes it takes an hour just to get started. Of course a lot of the newer indie PC games are like this too though, but I just have so many more of the old stuff to enjoy.

Yeah, Indy games aside, newer games are far more demanding. I often don't bother firing up a game when I only have an hour or so of downtime because of the complex stories, quests, and mission details. The game worlds are so big in a lot of stuff that it's tough to play for an hour or less. The retro games are fantastic to pick up and play without getting too involved to quit at any point.

My only complaint with PC gaming today, is with Steam.

Not that I dislike the platform, because I do like it. However, since they have opened the floodgates, it's harder and harder to block game types I never want to see without blocking things later that I do want to see. It's a combination of their filtering logic is completely broken, and their tags are too generic.

Seriously, how many hentai games need to created?

If PC Gaming is dead, why is this sub forum always so busy with new topics about current, future, and past games? I have never seen so many people talk about something that people claim is dead. (go to every forum out there, and you will see the same thing)..

So.. about PC Gaming being dead: Yea right.. I'm off to do some more PC Gaming.

You have to look for good deals. I just picked up a 1070 GTX Ti for $350 NEW and it came with a free copy of Monster Hunter. Not bad at all, considering the cards reg price is around $500.

Well this is a PC gaming based forum after all, so that point isn't entirely fair.

I'd say if you went to a console based forum, their PC gaming section would be significantly slower.

I'd say if you went to a console based forum, their PC gaming section would be significantly slower.

Rather than unintelligent conversations at least Meteor spent the time to name some games. It goes to show how little there is in AAA games on PC. This year alone on consoles I enjoyed

HZD expansion
Monster Hunter World (almost 4-5 months prior)
God of War
Spider Man
Detroit
RDR2

Not including many multi plats. Whereas, literally nothing on PC comes close to this. I would love to be proven wrong.
