Yeah, theres got to be some kind of new age vs influential + good game list. Quake 3 and UT are not as visually pleasing as todays multiplayer games(by todays standards) but literally laid the path for them to exist. I would argue though that UT/Q3 is a far better multiplayer game than 90% of the games that get released these days.

For this thread though you wanted it to be just our personal top 5 lists. Personally I'd put RtCW above HL. But not Ultima Underworld since that's not my kind of game.

My comments about HL being influential was on a personal level. Just so happens it could be objective influence on the industry as well.

1. Doom

Sloppy seconds....

Mechwarrior 2
Unreal Tournament
Interstate 76
Quake/Quakeworld
BeamNG.drive
MS Flight Simulator

The modern popular AAA games are mostly just enhancements of older original concepts, so they just don't stand out or suck me in.

It all depends on when you started gaming. Different people will have different titles as when you start gaming initially, everything is new an exciting. Over time, you realize everything is just re-hashed with newer graphics.

Regarding the discussion of HL2. I think HL2's problem is it didn't really age well. At the time it came out, having vehicles and physics, etc. was pretty new and felt fresh. Now all that stuff is just standard. And from a general game play or narrative perspective I personally don't think HL2 was that good (it was a lot of just driving from one place to another). Also, while the mute protagonist worked in the era of HL1, by the time HL2 rolled around it had become dated, and now from a modern perspective it seems even more odd.

The episodes, however, were a lot better. Those truly were good in my book, even despite Gordon still not talking. The problem is Valve developed corporate ADD and weren't able to make any more SP games after EP2. So, even in terms of the episodes, you can't really rate them that high when they're essentially unfinished.

Yeah I'm a big RTS fan. I put Half Life because that was the first game that really scared me.
