Default 9/11 Widow Killed in Continental Airlines Commuter Plane Crash in Buffalo

The plane crash was horrible to begin with, but this news just makes it even worse.

Beverly Eckert of Stamford, Conn., whose husband Sean Rooney died in the 2001 attacks, was one of the 50 victims of the Continental Flight 3407 accident.

Her sister Sue Bourque was at the airport awaiting official confirmation that Eckert had been on board. Officials investigating the crash have not yet confirmed Eckert was among the 44 passengers killed Thursday night.

"We know she was on that plane," Bourque told the Buffalo News, "and now she's with him."

Eckert and Rooney were high school sweethearts. She had continued to live in the couple's home in Stamford after he died more than seven years ago.

She was flying to her hometown Thursday night when the plane crashed on approach to the Buffalo airport. She had planned to celebrate Rooney's 58th birthday.

Explain to me why her being the widow of someone who died on 9/11 makes this any more tragic or meaningful than a mere coincidence?

Husband was killed by an aircraft. Her fate was similar. Not anymore tragic, just a sucky way to die considering her husband's death.

Then why make a news article or a thread with that as a header? By pointing that out, doesn't that become the point of interest?

She wasn't just some widow of 9/11. She was a well known figure and activist for the anti-terrorism campaign and had just met with Obama less than a month ago.

It's no different than when the media reported the death of Barbara Olsen on American 77.

At the end of the day it is nothing more than a coincidence. It makes for a sensational news story though which is why you're seeing it given special attention.

Ya know while it is sad I thought the exact same thing zero did. It sucks they all died but this person doesn't deserve any more coverage than the others do. Saying "imagine how the family feels" because they died in seperate air crash incidents is no different then the children of both parents who both died on this plane crash. Infact 9/11 victims probably have it "easier" if you want to put it that way, one parent was still alive to comfort them. In this case neither are from the onset.

Sucks though.

That's my point, the media sensationalizes everything into a human drama story. I'm not saying it doesn't suck, I'm just saying I find it peculiar people (well just the OP) pointed that fact out like it's significant.

And frag, it's not ironic, just coincidental. Had she been a lobbyist trying to prove that Dash-8's are the safest transports in the air and then crashed in one, that would've been ironic.

Losing two members of the same family to horrific events is noteworthy. No, it doesn't lessen the impact of losing a single family member, but to have it happen again would just be ...
