Default Bad 3D Will Be the Death of 3D

http://gizmodo.com/5514259/bad-3d-wi...he-death-of-3d

As Katzenberg reminds us, "all 3D is not created equal." The post-production 3D in Clash of the Titans, he explains, is the worst of the worst, and he thinks it won't be long before audiences get hip to the scam and start pushing back

Is this info out there for every movie to know if the it 'authentic' 3D or not?
Apparently dragons is great (which I was going to take my daughter to this weekend if I wasn't so damn sick), but I would not have known about this topic otherwise since I've never been to any 3D movie before.

They're not going to advertise it on the one-sheet, but this type of info is easy to find on the internet.

Death of 3D? Not likely. But people will be more selective about what movies to watch in 3D. Most lkely will result in the death of "bad 3D".

Anything all CGI should be as its easy enough to go back and re-render with the other viewpoint. Real life we've got Avatar and the forthcoming Resident Evil film. Beyond that i don't know

Death, nah.... There's always going to be movies out there that will be just jaw dropping, so peoples standards and expectations will always drive them to go see another 3D movie. Unfortunately like all other commercialism products companies can and will feed off of this to help sell their not so great movies. I believe making a lackluster 3D movie will have more of an impact for awards rather than having people not go see them... especially when the price isnt that much more, $1 or so, than regular theaters.

I'd almost think that it meant the opposite.. that 3d (cgi, whatever) is so common, so of course you're going to get some crap now and then. Total amount of crap = proportional to the total amount of "3d" created.

Most of the 3D IMAX films where actually shot in Stereoscopic 3D (I mean the feature length IMAX3D films, not ones with couple 3D scenes). Also The Final Destination, Journey to the Center of the Earth and My Bloody Valentine 3D where also shot in Stereoscopic 3D. There are other examples, but I don't feel like doing the research lol

Personally I already long for the end of 3d. It's something I can totally live w/o and enjoy movies just the same.

3D is just a 3D and nothing excited. I can watch any movies without 3D.

I've only seen 3d in the IMAX and it's always been pretty mindblowing. I went to see Alice in Wonderland w/my gf and we went to a cheaper theater w/o 3d and it didn't really matter.

I haven't tried 3d w/o it taking up all my vision (ie IMAX) and I'm not sure it'd be the same. Like watching it on a small TV there'd prob be no point.

I saw Alice in Wonderland in 3D. Wasn't too impressed. From what I saw 3D tends to be blurry (mostly the 2D backgrounds) and the colours are muted. I rather have clarity then some cheap gimmick that loses its appeal after ten minutes.

Alice in Wonderland is a product of bad 3D. The movie was converted into 3D instead of actually being shot in stereoscopic 3D like Avatar.

I thought 3D died when IMAX 3D tickets cost $17.50 and above. I went to see one 3D film and it will most likely be the last with the pricing they have. I didn't even get a coupon for money off the movie when/if I decide to buy it. WTF?

Actually, Alice is a good example of how 2D to 3D can be rendered appropriately, since the muted colours the original author is talking about is a result of the colour palette/saturation Tim Burton typically uses in his movies.

In my checking last weekend, Cinemark and AMC were both 9.50 for a primetime evening movie + $3 for the 3D showing.
$5 for any AM movie + 3D

Well the funny thing is it depends on where in the country you are. Here in Jersey it now costs $17.50 for a IMAX 3D ticket at the local AMC.

The new definition of 3-D: Dig deeper, dude.

The cost of movie tickets is rising this weekend, with seats for the IMAX 3-D cartoon "How To Train Your Dragon" soaring to $19.50 for adults at one Brooklyn theater.

And movie fans say it's Hollywood robbery.

"It's pretty absurd that in this economy, they want to charge that much for a movie," said Yelena Mandenberg, 20, of Brooklyn.

Some New York theaters are boosting the price for IMAX 3-D movies by $5 a ticket, according to a survey by analyst Richard Greenfield of BTIG.

The jump wasn't that steep at the AMC Kips Bay on Manhattan's East Side, but patrons there will find a top price of $19.50 for adults and $16 for kids.

That's $71 for mom, dad and two kids to see one film - not counting popcorn - up from the previous cost of $59.

Thread title: great! I can only hope for the death of "3D".

At least until they get the tech perfected where you don't need stupid glasses (I already have to wear stupid glasses - I don't need to look even more stupid wearing 2 pairs at the same time) and everything is filmed such that people prone to motion sickness aren't constantly throwing up on their theater seats/couches.

I dunno how the hell you could do it in a theater without glasses.

I honestly think 3D is worthless, unless it is in an IMAX. Regular theaters do not do 3D movies justice.

No it was shot in stereoscopic 3D using the PACE Cameron Fusion system. Can read an interview about what it was like shooting in Stereoscopic 3D here
