depends what you mean by survival. i'm thinking horror/survival but maybe that's different from straight survival. the dead space games are amazing. 1 and 2 are perfect and amazing in every way. 3 is weaker imo but some people like it.

Both FEAR and Doom are solid games...

I watched my friend play Project Zomboid and that looked pretty good.

SOMA immediately comes to mind. Wouldn't say it's the best but well worth a go.

I'm not big into the genre, and like mentioned its defined differently depending on who you are. There's always someone chiming in saying "that's not a real survival game, blah blah."

The Resident Evil 2 remake is the most recent one that I thought was just awesome. Play it on the harder difficulty though to get the proper survival gameplay.

Alien Isolation I also thought was one of the better ones in recent memory. It does get criticized for dragging a bit in the middle, but overall its just an amazing survival horror game done in a perfectly recreated movie franchise based setting.

If you haven't played these yet I highly recommend both.

I tried to get into Alien: Isolation but it just never clicked for me.

Clearly the best single player survival game is The Witcher 3. It's the best single-player everything

DOOM 3 is probably my favorite. That game when I was younger would have me so scared to go into the next room that I'd literally have to sit and wait for 5 minutes calming down

Bioshock is great but that is because it is based off of System Shock with System Shock 2 being the mack daddy of them all. It also gave life to Half Life which gave us Valve.

The Fear games are nice. The early Thief games have good levels that can get under your skin.

The Original Resident Evil with it crazy camera angels and equally crazy game play can freak you out for not only with scares but for how do I kill that big bad that is just off screen lol

Nocturne, if you can find it, and hunt the undead as a member of Spook-house during the roaring 20's if I remember right. cutting edge for it's time

What do you mean by survival?

The goal of most games is to survive to the next level/area/end game.

You'll become a super powerful Geralt in Witcher 3 but you're still "surviving".

If you mean actually survive from near certain death in almost every encounter, then that would be games like Outlast and Outlast 2 (you have no weapons), or games where you never "level" up or have an assortment of weapons to make you a badass. I'd say Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 2 fit that criteria, there's weapons but ammo is scarce and you can't barge in Doom style.

Realms of the Haunting is an old game, but was one of the best survival horror games with some adventure elements mixed in. Even today on steam it's highly rated for a dated game.

Have yet to play any of it's type that pulled me in as much as that one did.

remember free beta demos, not that long ago. beta demos got me HOOKED on BF:BC2 and BF3.

I think gameplay statistics have killed demos (they weren't turning people into buying customers), and refund policies have effectively replaced the practical need for demos. Just keep an eye on the clock!
