You may be right, but there was definitely nothing in that last video that convinced me.of that. RDR2 also has some amazingly good landscape and weather effects. You're not up in the air and can't see it all at once, but what you can see is spectacular.

Of course, RDR2 isn't calculating lift coefficients, generating air traffic, etc., while rendering beautiful effects. But beyond that difference there were a few encouraging things I saw in that 12/31/19 video.

The first one occurs @ :57 and shows what is probably late summer afternoon flying southwest. On the right you have this nice interplay of sunlight and haze, with glare on the water. Way off to the left you see where it's darker and more cloudy, the blue-gray translucent curtain of shadow. There's just a lot more haze up in the air that you see than there is when you're on the ground, and the interplay of light, glare, shadow, and haze can create some of the stunning visuals you get in real flying. Sometimes if you're above a distinct haze layer it can look as if someone spilled watered-down milk on top of a glass table. It's hard to describe. Anyway, previous flightsims have gotten better at rendering this type of thing, but that video shows they are poised to take it up a notch (at least).

The second one occurs at @ 2:09 and it's simply the dreaded icing. And when I say dreaded I mean not just to pilots, but to sim users and designers as well. Icing has simply not been done in flightsims with any degree of realism, both visually or in flight dynamics. (I admit I'm not familiar with Prepar3D v. 4x) The icing in the video is time-lapsed (I hope for brevity), but it sure seems realistic.

The third one is @ 2:14 where they seem to be using modeling illustration of what I hope is differential lift on the wings. This has been done in X-Plane forever, but never in MSFS. You can't have realistic spins without that.

Fourth, at @ 2:22, or thereabouts, they are showing off airflow over mountains, something very important in real flying (I've never had the pleasure-- or displeasure) but something that's not yet been done in flightsim to my knowledge.

Anyhow, my two centavos.

at some point in the future MS flight sim might as well taken over actual pro grade sims... aviation industry might as well ask game developers to built simulators for them...

where did those full blown cockpit 737 sim that are commercially open to public around the world come from? they are now visually looks puny compared to MSFS 2020.

All these videos looks amazing and smooth but until it’s seen running on a modest computer then it’s hard to imagine a “real” pc running this in all its glory. My fear is to get it running smoothly it will end up looking more like MSFS2000 !

I suspect that the main hit to graphics on lower cards will be ground detail (buildings, trees, cars, roads, etc and the draw distance for each). That and texture resolution. But if RDR2 looks and plays great on medium quality on a GTX 1070 at 1080p, then I suspect MSFS2020 will look great too.

Time will tell but I don't think the graphics are that big a jump over some of what today's sims already deliver. Especially if you assume the trailers are showing the "best of".

The thing that makes it special is if it can deliver that level of detail anywhere in the world unlike the hi-res scenery which modern sims only give in very specific locations.

It does but it's online only for those graphics, the faster your connection the better the game looks.

Which means those of us with relatively low speeds (mine is 30/10) may not experience the best the game has to offer.

It does, at least as far as the map data exists.

The point that I totally failed to make is that I'm looking for quantity of scenery rather than a huge jump in quality. I was buzzing Manhattan in Aerofly 2 VR last night and it looked great as long as I was over the island. I didn't have to go far before the detail vanished. It might be nice one day to just keep flying and never lose that detail.

RDR2 looks great but density of buildings was not the thing, ground and weather looked the best, with FS then flying over a densely populated area I can feel a massive FPS drop taking away from immersion which is really key to any simulation.

Depending on where you fly anyway. My understanding is you can cache high-quality visuals for an area if you want.

So there is still time.

Those who just signed up for the insider program don’t forget you also need to sign up for the alpha and complete a survey etc. Something that I completely missed but done now... fingers crossed.

Can you tell what is available and how are your experience? Have you done extreme testing (as in doing all kinds of abnormal flying and crashing if possible)?

I've been playing it since 8pm. I'm very impressed. I have been doing a bunch free flight kind of things. I just wanted to see how it felt. I haven't done any crashing type stuff yet.

I am without a doubt going to purchase this game. I really like it a lot. It really would not surprise me at all if this wasn't a game of the year candidate.
