ATI Technologies Mobility 7500 heat plate broken?

I have a Compaq Presario 1500, and it runs really good. Except when playing 3D games, it will suddenly shut off after about 10 minutes. I can leave the computer on all day and night, and it will never do that unless there is a game or program that requires 3D acceleration. I sent the laptop back to Compaq, and they repaired it, telling me they had to replace some kind of heat plate.
It worked fine for a few months, and started doing it again. But now it is no longer under warrenty. I took it to the local computer store and he told me the only way he thought he could fix it was to get a new motherboard (which includes the Mobility card built into it), but that would cost over $500!
He knew nothing about any heat plates in the laptop.
Does anybody know anything about this? I'd like to repair this myself.
Thanks for any help.

Should be easy enough to fix, the Heatsink has prolly just slid off the GPU, first you need to gain access to the inside of the Laptop, this is done by takeing the keyboard out. Now i'm not sure how to do this on your compaq but they are usually held in by either screws from the back or by taking some plastics off above the keyboard to reveale the screws holding it down.

Once the keyboard is out you should see both the CPU heatsink and GPU heatsink, you may need to remove some parts from inside your laptop before you can take the GPU heatsink off and findout whats wrong.

its different from laptop to laptop though, my Gericom for example has everything connected, umm, well, upside down. so you open hatches below the laptop to reach the GPU, CPU, memory etc...

Never seen one thats upside down before, i'm pritty sure the Compaq will not be, i've had Dell's (C600 / C640 / C800 / C840 / 510m / 510 / 5100) Acer (1622) Samsung (V20) Apart without any problems, you gain access to the inside as described in my above post.
