Default lower GCN controller price, wavebird announced/released date

Nintendo to release its wireless controller ahead of schedule and lowers the price of stock controllers.

Nintendo announced in a press release this morning that the WaveBird wireless controller for the Nintendo GameCube will debut on June 10, for a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $34.95. The controller was originally scheduled for release June 24 at $39.95. Nintendo also announced that it has lowered the price of its stock GameCube controllers from $34.99 to $24.99 effective immediately.
"Nintendo always strives to improve the player's gaming experience," said Peter MacDougall, executive vice president of sales and marketing at Nintendo of America. "The WaveBird controller, with its new lower price point, exemplifies our commitment, allowing players to get comfortable and enjoy new freedom, while still being connected to the onscreen action."

The WaveBird controller is capable of relaying controller input for the GameCube lineup of games from distances over 30 feet without wires, transmitting radio frequency (RF) signals to a receiver plug in one of the console's controller ports. The WaveBird is the same size as a standard GameCube Controller, with a slightly extended lower end to accommodate the two AA batteries that power the controller for more than 100 hours of wireless gameplay. The RF standard allows the WaveBird to remain effective even from behind walls. There are 16 different channel frequencies to choose from, so four controllers can be hooked up with ease.
