Default HD4870x2: Does the fan fix work for you

Just wondering if anyone got it working and how.

Have you tried the new ATI Tray Tool for Fan Control yet?

Doesn't work on vista 64. Installing the ReadyDriver plus on restart tells me when I select it that boot is missing or corrupt.
Edit: read the guys thread about ATT. Doesn't work on hd4870x2 anyway.

I have vista64 as well. I was using rivea with the 3870 X2 but it doesn't work with this one. I tried the fan fix (which I am not even sure I have done correctly) and it didn't work. I created a profile in the CCC and then I went to that proflie.xml and edited it.
Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic"
changed to
Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="80"

Property name="Want" value="0"
changed to
Property name="Want" value="80"

Yea value is supposed to me "Manual" instead of Automatic.

You don't want to change the line that says FanSpeedAlgorithm either. Just the "Want" value. I'm not saying it will work for you as Clerick hasn't had much luck. Anyway, it should look like this ....

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="80" />

See this thread....

Yep that change didn't help me either. Hopefully there will be a new rivatuner soon. I saw that there is a beta atitratools but I have vista 64bit so it will not work for me.

How many values are there in the xml? Change both 0 and 1 and see if it takes after that. If it has two values (one for each GPU) then the hack may not work until both the 0 and 1 values are changed.

Good thought if it appears in the XML like a Crossfire Solution. I have a feeling though, that ATI just killed the hack in the current HD 4870X2 Driver or the HD 4870X2 Vid-BIOS.

Perhaps they may not like users messing with the fan speed that they've chosen to be the best for their product. Same reason they probably haven't included any kind of fan control in the CCC. This hack in the wrong hands could potentially kill the card if set to manual at to low a speed. So I guess what I'm trying to say, it's the same reason card makers don't like you hacking their Vid-BIOS either. I'm not saying I agree with it, just playing devils advocate here.

Man it sucks. I'm getting game crashes (screen goes black and pc unresponsive) and I know it's because the card is overheating (and I have excellent air flow). All could be easily solved if the damn fan worked (seriously 27% fan speed is retarded).

Expert tools worked on hd4870x2! I gotta say though: holy crap. At 100% i've never heard anything as loud before. Hell 50% is loud as hell. GTX280 at 80% fan speed was less loud then 50% on hd4870x2! I gotta say though. At 50% fan speed my idle dropped to 36c. At 100% I'm at 26c. But at 100% it is LOUD.

On my 4870X2 temp is 37C at 100% which is rather tornadoey loud but 50% is quiet enough and is about 42C idle compaired to 79C idle beforehand. 40% would probably be the decent sweet spot for noise vs heat really (if it let you set it that low)

I like the ability to set different fan levels for 2D and 3D.

How did you get it to work? Whenever I slide one slider, both 2D and 3D slide together.

Also, when I have fixed speed set, the lowest setting it will let me chose is 50%?

Ok guys turns out the fan fix does work after all. However you have to edit the 2nd fan selection and not the first. This way I made two profiles: one with stock fan speed and one with fan speed for ingame. No longer need expert tool and I can have whatever fan speed I want (using 40% and 55%). This is what you edit with an hd4870x2:
Code:
- <Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_1">
  <Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
  </Feature>
- <Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_1">
  <Property name="Want" value="2658" />
  </Feature>
- <Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_1">
  <Property name="Want" value="55" />

I'm wondering what kind of fan issue are you guys talking about? Is it like the 3870x2 fan which does not speed up enough to adequately cool the card?

This is what you edit with an hd4870x2:
Code:
- <Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_1">
  <Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
  </Feature>
- <Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_1">
  <Property name="Want" value="2658" />
  </Feature>
- <Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_1">
  <Property name="Want" value="55" />
I guess Xion was correct then when he suggested it may be something like this a few posts up. I'll add this to the main thread as well and nice work. Quick question though Clerick, I see there is a FanSpeedRMPTarget value specified of 2658, did you add this or was it already there? As this was not changed in the original instructions.

I suppose it's something that can also be rectified via the new ATT or Rivatuner?

BTW, I was just about to step out to buy the 4870x2 before reading this thread and it kind of stopped my impulsive action.

Don't change that value. When you change the fan speed %, hit save and then load a profile it automaticly adjusts that value by itself.
