Default Radeon 9600XT VS NVIDIA 5700ULTRA VS FX5900XT

Ok, more stupid newb questions from me, as I recently have come across a few reviews showing that the ultra is better... so, whats the difference in performance and price? I am really into ATI, but if I can get better performance from NVIDIA, they may sway me. The main game I play on my comp is Halo PC/CE, so any performance issues would be appreciated.

Default Re: GeForce FX 5700 Ultra vs Radeon 9600xt?

I've owned both cards.
The 5700U is an excellent card, and has a powerful vertex engine that makes DX8 games really fly. Still, I was noticing some annoying mip transitions in games like UT03 and and it was driving me a little buggy.
The 9600XT I owned(shortly) was a pretty equal performer, but AA & AF came with less of a penalty hit it seemed, and DX9 games like Halo were noticeably faster, with better image quality.
If you buy the 5700U, dont push the memory to insane speeds...around 1.0Ghz is all you'd want to go safely

The 9600XT really destroys the 5700U pretty badly. Especially in any newer games like Tomb Raider, Halo and Painkiller -- games with even a moderate amount of shaders.
oc-zone (Portuguese)

As new games come out with more shaders like Farcry,… the 9600XT will pull away even more.

The 5700U uses a lower Trilinear filtering than the 9600XT.

The big problem with the FX cards (similar to the Ti4200-4600) is that they take a huge hit in performance with AA/AF -- much more than the newer ATI cards like the 9600’s. NV lowerd 4AA down on the FX cards so the 4AA on the 5700U is barely better than its 2AA -- and not even close to the quality of the rotated-grid 4AA on the 9600XT.

The other problem is that in a lot of newer reviews is that NV cheats -- their drivers detect certain games that the Hardware sites like to bench with and then lowers 8AF down to about 2AF (and maybe even lowers the 4AA sometimes). So when you see a graph with 4AA/8AF the NV card, in many cases it really isn’t doing 4AA/8AF, and it’s an illusion that the 5700U is competing with the 9600XT. Games like MS Flight Sim 2004, UT4 Demo, Lock On Modern Air Combat to name a few.

oh wow. I thought NVIDIA's sales dropped so much after that little "cheat" session that went on (ATI did it as well I know), that NVIDIA had gotten rid of that. As well, I have noticed in articles that that was the case, as AA and AF were cranked up, the 9600XT pulled ahead. And Im tired of playing all my games at the lowest possible levels with my 9200se. Add in the fact that I can get a 9600XT cheaper than the compared to 5700Ultra, and I think I have a winner!
