ATI Technologies Ancient AMD GPUs destroy Nvidia’s when it comes to Doom Eternal

Running Doom Eternal at 1080p on low quality, the GTX 680 (4GB) managed a pretty poor average frame rate of 35 fps. Whereas the Radeon HD 7970 (GHz Edition, with 3GB of video RAM) managed 65 fps, almost double the performance, and above the typically observed level for pleasantly smooth gaming (60 fps).

What’s also eye-opening is that when going to Nvidia’s next-generation, the GTX 780 Ti only manages 37 fps. And moving further on to the Maxwell cards, which are still very much around today, the GTX 960 hits 46 fps – still a good way behind AMD’s 7970.

Does Vulkan help?

I dont have a GPU nearly as old, but (at least in doom 2016, not eternal i dont have eternal...so i dunno how much more demanding iti s) Vulkan vs Opengl was a huge difference for me.

Vulkan high/ultra everything,
OpenGL had to drop a few settings (plus ran several frameslower)

Probably helps that Vulkan is heavily based on Mantle.

Well, duh. 7970 is just a roided-up larger variant of the GPU in an an Xbox or PS4. Of course a AAA console port will run well on it.

and being a console port means just about nothing anyway when it comes to performance. It's just the engine runs like a dream in general.

I honestly thought my PC would struggle a bit with the ID Tech6 engine when i still had my PhenomII setup. IT kinda did in OGL mode but Vulkan got me running max everything. With the ryzen setup now its cake.

I can imagine ID Tech7 is optimized pretty good too.
