I believe Geekbench also uses AVX which is where 11900k would gain such a large advantage.

Personally, I find it hard to believe Intel would release it if it were slower than last gen, but who knows..

I think it'll be faster in single-thread for sure, but there's no way they're making up enough IPC to negate the 2 less cores in multi-thread. I don't see the chip being much better of an OCer compared to the 10900K either; single-core boost is still 5.3Ghz.

I'm curious how it'll handle overclocking. Maybe that will be a spot where RKL surpasses Comet Lake.

I bet it's already pushed close to its max.

Cores don't scale perfectly so they likely need in the region of 15-20% IPC to make up the difference. I think it'll fall slightly short, apart from AVX workloads where it'll beat 10900k.

In anything using 8 cores or less, it should be faster, otherwise what's the point?

Main benefits of OCing are removing the Turbo boost time limits and Power limits. Then crank the bitch up.

I'm expecting it to OC decently since there's 2 less cores that need to be binned. I've noticed that many 10900Ks that are mediocre OCers seem to have one core that holds back the rest. I think that's part of the reason Intel allowed the mainstream platform to use per-core OCing and OCTVB.

I agree, should be faster in 8core/16thread of course, but we're seeing games start to use more than 16threads, and that's where the 11900K is going to start faltering.

The main benefit will be if people can reliably hit 5.3Ghz all-core and make up the two less cores with IPC and clock-speed, but I don't see that happening.

I haven't really seen games that benefit from more than 16 threads but I stand to be corrected.

In other news, it seems all ASUS Z490 boards lack gen4 M.2 capability...

I believe Cyberpunk uses more than 16threads. I'm sure it'll become more common this year as well.

Not surprised regarding ASUS boards. I'm super happy with my MSI MEG ACE; won't be going ASUS for a good while, or until MSI ****s up. I can't believe they jacked the prices on the Z590 MAXIMUS HERO to $499. That's a ****ing $299-349 board at best. Bottom of the barrel Maximus board for $500.. ASUS can get bent.

Because they were poorly mismanaged. Hence new CEO. It would have been better to scrap Rocketlake desktop and focus on undercutting AMD with the 10 series since those chips are decently fast. But it's too late now and the chip has probably been in full productions for the past several months. This makes undercutting with comet lake difficult since you would be undercutting Rocket Lake too.

The rumored prices are not looking too favorable for RKL, with the 11900K seemingly coming in north of $500. Intel has about 10-15% performance disadvantage to make up vs Ryzen 5000. Let's say they come out 10% ahead, they're still down four cores vs the 5900X. It just doesn't look like a very good buy to me at the high end.

The stuff going up against the 5800X may look more favorable.

Honestly this is a bad thing. It means that amd prices will likely stay absurdly high both due to high demand and being KOTH until alder lake.

I wanted intel to pull an Nvidia thing here and somehow become competitive enough to see some demand move its way so prices on amd can moderate. What nvidia fans always want to see from amd on the gpu front...

I guess it's a slight increase over 10th gen, except in gaming where it's barely faster overall, and in some case slower. Although for that matter in gaming Ryzen 5000 or Intel 9000 onward are so close that you're basically just picking nits. You're going to be GPU limited in almost all circumstances anyway, and even when you're not they're close enough that you'll rarely be able to tell the difference between them.

I wish the 10900K had been included in the comparison, because I'd like to see the effect of losing the two cores versus the IPC improvement. Right now it looks to me like in core heavy workloads you're coming out behind vs the 10 core parts. Single-threaded I guess you could be 10% ahead, depending, I guess.

But 10000 series CPUs are pretty favorably priced right now, so you also have to take that into consideration. If you can get a good price on 10000 series I am not sure that 11000 series makes sense.

Anandtech's review is quite lazy. No OCing, and fails to mention that there should be a decent performance increase from the upcoming microcode update..

Take a look at the 10900K prices with a MSI Z490 Unify if you haven't purchased already. Prices on Comet Lake have plummeted, and they're a really, really good deal right now.

I don't see much of a need for more than 8 cores because even if games support them, all games are being built around a GPU bound console with 8 slow CPU cores. It's unlikely that you will get any benefit in games even if they do support more than 8 cores. I don't see this changing for a few years yet.

That being said, I don't see why anyone would want to give up the free extra cores on the 5900 from AMD over the 11900K unless Intel brought a huge increase in single thread performance that would actually increase real world game performance. It doesn't look like that happened.

My 2.5 year old I9 9900K paired with a 3090FE is getting the same benchmark results as KAC's new setup. Personally, I see and have seen little reason to upgrade since the 9900K. Both companies are spinning their wheels right now. If I wanted the best right now, I would probably go AMD though. I'm going to wait for DDR5 and PCIE 5 before upgrading. My system has another 2 years in it I'm willing to bet.

Already bought, plus I don't want to buy a out of date chipset that has pci express 3, and no pci 4 NVME support (reduced speed).

This 5800x will last me a few years so I wanted at minimum a few features that will last, especially since current GPU's are PCI express 4, and while there's only 2fps difference, 4080/5080 will just further that gap.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I noticed that last night. If the 10900K is as fast as the 5950 according to hardware unboxed and the 11900K is 11% faster than that... It would be about 15% faster than the 5900 at gaming. Not bad actually. I'm not in the market but if those slides are actually true then the 11900K might be worth a consideration over the 5900 if you primarily game with your setup. Everything else seems to be about equal so it's a matter of having extra cores for non gaming vs extra speed for gaming. I'd probably go with the 11900K over the 5900X if those slides are true but they are Intel slides so who knows at this point.

Yeah, I think you can pre order them now in certain places. I read that a store in Germany is already selling them.

Thanks, will keep a close eye on this.

Will a z490 board work with 11th gen or is z590 required?

You can use Z490 with it. If you buy one be sure and post some benchmarks and impressions. It's always exciting when new hardware hits the market.
