To put my two cents in on this, my (long dead) 19 inch NEC MultiSync 97F CRT packaging said it was 1280 x 1024 at 85 Hz, 1600 x 1200 at 60 Hz. Turned out it could do 1920 x 1440 at 60 Hz as well. Blade of Darkness looked damn sharp (but with annoying 60 Hz flicker ). It was only 11 years later I bought my current monitor that I could play at that resolution again.

I've got an Acer XF270HU 1440p 144hz freesync monitor and it's excellent. Replaced a 27" BenQ GW2765 1080p 60hz and the difference was night and day as you say.

Once you get a 144hz monitor you ain't going back to 60hz even at 4K. Thinking about a 3440x1440 widescreen but not decided yet. This looks nice for about £400 which is about the same cost as my current monitor which is 4 years old now.
