Default Korea looking at Gigabit Internet speed

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/22/te...ref=technology

Man do they have a good thing going on in South Korea

"SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea already claims the world’s fastest Internet connections — the fastest globally by far — but that is hardly good enough for the government here.
Choi Gwang-gi is overseeing South Korea's plan to connect every home in the country to the Internet at one gigabit per second by the end of next year.

By the end of 2012, South Korea intends to connect every home in the country to the Internet at one gigabit per second. That would be a tenfold increase from the already blazing national standard and more than 200 times as fast as the average household setup in the United States.
A pilot gigabit project initiated by the government is under way, with 5,000 households in five South Korean cities wired. Each customer pays about 30,000 won a month, or less than $27......"

Question is who really needs a Gigabit connection.

I couldn't justify it certainly.

The South Korean government is introducing policies aimed at curbing the amount of time children spend playing online games.
The first involves barring online gaming access to young people of school age between 12am (midnight) and 8am.
The other policy suggests slowing down people's internet connections after they have been logged on to certain games for a long period of time.
before I'd be pretty pissed off if my internet connection slowed down in the middle of my game.. but then again if they chopped it from a gig per second to 1/4 gig a second I probably wouldn't notice..

For HD media streaming, having a Gigabit connection would be... Regardless of whether you kept the content on a HDD or not.

Very nice, though you'd be limited by what your storage setup can do. My RAID setup can muster about around 90-120mb/sec. So even if you have had all that bandwidth in abundance it would only go as fast as your specs allow.

Would be awesome though

I pay $95 p/m for 3.5Mbps down and 1.0Mbps up, NO cap.

And even as of the past 3 months, once 5pm to 12pm hits, I cant get above 1.2mbps AND I'm getting this odd thing like "Data stop" were between 5seconds to 30seconds ALL incoming data stops! Causing me to get disconnected from EVERYTHING and after it stops I get slammed with a bunch of data from what SHOULD of been incoming to me a steady rate. Last night I was kicked of WoW 10 times in 13 min.
Tech support keeps blowing me off, and i'm getting pissed

I'm using Motorola Canopy technology, provided by this service http://www.e-vergent.com/ .

I live only 4miles from the nearest house that has cable, and too far from any phone switch for DSL, and no Fiber out here. And there will NEVER be cable based broadband out in the rural area Racine WI either or ANY rural place for that fact. Since DirectTV/DISH has the market, no need to invest in cable. Since 80% of people has cell-phones, no need for AT&T to run new lines or provide new DSL switches.

My ISP sent us an e-mail letting us know we will have the gigabit service in 2 months. Already on fiber, but, hey why not upgrade. $45.00 U.S a month and no caps.
