Default Client Setup Guide: Single console client using built-in service installer

Using the Built-In Service Installer (single client method)
  1. Download the current console client from http://folding.stanford.edu (currently version 5.04 beta)

  2. Create a Folding directory and copy the downloaded client in it.

    • Note: You can name and place the Folding directory per your preferences. However, in this guide we will assume that you are using c:\fah\FAH.exe.

  3. Rename the client to FAH.exe (optional, but this will make future steps & upgrades easier)

    • Single client example: c:\fah\FAH.exe

  4. Run the client executable (FAH.exe) and go through the config process:

Configuration Notes:
  • Replace my username with your own (unless you're feeling particularly generous )

  • Simply press ENTER to choose the default value (default value is listed in brackets)

  • Recommend users w/ less than 512Mb system memory NOT enable bigWUs (allow receipt of work assignments ... option)

  • Recommend setting memory indicator to 512Mb or 1/2 of system memory (whichever is lower). For example, if you have 1Gb of system memory, set the client to use a maximum of 512Mb of RAM.

  • Set Advanced Methods to No, even if you plan to enable Advanced Methods (commonly referred to as -advmethods). We will enable the -advmethods flag in a future step along w/ some additional flags.

  • Set the MachineID to 1

Customizing your Console Client

Advanced options may be added to the [email protected] client through use of FLAGS. However, adding these flags to the Console Client run as a Service entails editing the Windows Registry. Fortunately, there is a tool available that allows you to make the necessary changes without opening up Regedit:

Download pkfsct.zip Here Updated to V3!

Using pkfsct.exe:
  1. Download, extract and run pkfsct.exe.
  2. Click the "Choose client" button, navigate to the directory where you installed the [email protected] client then choose the client executable (eg FAH504-Console.exe)
  3. If the service exists then the parameters that are currently applied to the client will be displayed
  4. Make changes to the parameters as required then hit the "Update registry" button to save the changes
  5. Click the "Restart service" button to restart the client

That it! You should now be running multiple Console Clients set as services!

Please note: if you see an error or have a recommendation in regard to this guide, please make a post about it in the Distributed Computing Forum or send me a PM. Thanks!

FOLD ON!!!

GUIDE FAQ
  • In your Client Setup Guide topic, you link to a pkfsct.exe file. When I download this file and try to open it I get an error saying "cannot open file: do not appear to be a valid achive". Do you have another download link available?

    Answer:

pkfsct.zip is a zipped archive containing a folder named pkfsct. The folder includes two file: pkfsct.exe and readme.txt. You *should* be able to download and extract the contents with either Windows' built-in zip utility or any number of 3rd party utilities. Once extracted, simply browse into the pkfsct folder and run pkfsct.exe.
  • Any point in enabling advmethods if you do not have a p4?

    Answer:

Yes. Point bonuses are not limited to QMD WUs alone. Still, some consideration must be given before one makes the choice to enable these settings.

The -advmethods flag allows client access to "advanced methods" work units (WUs). These work units will inherently be less stable than regular WUs, so should be monitored carefully. It is helpful to also use the -verbosity 9 flag in conjunction with the -advmethods flag to help diagnose any resulting issues.

Because of the additional risk associated with the -advmethods flag, point bonuses are often associated with the related WUs. This is especially true with WUs obtained by use of the bigWU/-advmethods combination, which unlocks the most demanding WUs available (including but not limited to QMD WUs).

At this time, we recommend enabling the bigWU/-advmethods combo only on recent level hardware with a minimum of 512Mb of system memory (1Gb recommended). Additionally, the user with a multi-proc, multi-core, or HT enabled workstation should take care in their consideration of running multiple clients when using this setting since doing so may impact system performance and/or stability.
