Default Internet Explorer help needed

Usually when you click on a link to download something, it has a pop-up asking wether you want to save it or open it and there is a ticker box saying "Always open this file."

Well, anyway, here's my problem. I don't want IE to always open the file everytime I click on a download link. Is there some way to fix this? Thanks.

I'll try to help but first I'll give the general disclaimer;
I'm not accountable for you or anything you do as a result of this advice.

and also, using Internet explorer is like buying a home security and alarm system then leaving it off all the time with the windows open while on vacation.

First thing to try is reset everything back to defaults, so tools -> Internet options
then the security tab, and choose default level, if available. then the privacy tab and click default, then advanced and click restore defaults.

if that doesn't work beef up the security one notch at a time and try again.

but the best solution is to use Mozilla 1.7.3, Firefox 1.0, or Opera 7

Depends on whether you consider not installing scumware that will turn your
PC into a spam-zombie and tap into your keyboard then mail your credit card numbers to the Russian mafia to be 'better' or not.

If it wasn't required for Windows Update and various other programs that use IE to do their web access, I'd delete IE from my system.

Here's an interesting little read. A bit dated but spot on.

Or you could use Opera as well which would also eliminate those security concerns. Personally, I like it better than any of the other browsers by a long-shot.

I don't really see a reason to switch from IE though if you prefer it and use common sense. I have never gotten any spyware, hijacks, or drive-by-downloads by using IE. Maybe it's because I never surf to really "shady" sites that do that kind of stuff. I do think a part of the issue is related to people's surfing habits....

Opera is really the best browser. It's so fast, flashy, and has endless customization. The banner add kinda bites, but it's easy enough to get rid of.
