I'm really interested in this given the system requirements. I'm all for pushing the boundaries and having a game drop 32bit level systems. I will fully support any developer that does this. That said, I don't think I've ever played a Chris Robert's game. I find space games amazing and love anything space related. What would be the best preorder package to purchase?

It depends what you want to do in the game. Also, pick a package that includes alpha and beta access.

If you want to be a fighter pick a package with an Hornet or a 325a.
If you want to be a trader, a good choice would be the Freelancer.

Anyway, look at the ship stats ...

Remember, if you change your mind (atleast until November=, you can melt down your package, and choose another ...

The Caterpillar ship is now currently available (a limited edition ship) for this weekend. Looks rather nice, but rather a high price to put it mildly...

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/c...aterpillar-Art

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/c...e-Pirate-Ships

This ship can be bought in the game for ingame money rather than real money.

Well it takes years to make a big AAA game.
They started this year

It might seem that way, but remember, it's all because it's what is funding this game. There is no publisher that is paying for the developement of this AAA game, we, the gamers, are. Well, I don't know about you , but atleast I'm helping fund it, by now having about a dozen ship (among them a recently bough Caterpillar

It just looks so damn nice, it's really a shame that it doesn't have as much cargo space as the connie, or I would use it as my main trading ship. Well, there is a possibility it can be refitted for more cargo space, I guess ...

I did buy a Caterpillar in the end to go with all my other ships, since it is modular (you can add mining / refining / boarding or extra cargo amongst other things (so it should be able to carry 60 tons or so if you get rid of the boarding part) The ship also the main crew portion of the ship can break away in an emergency (it has its own engines) Plus there is talk that you may be able to convert it into a pocket carrier so it could carry a few cutlasses for 'search and rescue'

It also comes with a aliens type power loader and 2 heavy space suits apparently.

So it has a lot going for it really.

I have:
Aurora LX, Cutlass, Caterpillar, Constellation and a 325a.

I did have a Hornet & Freelancer but I melted those to get the Caterpillar.

Since you can hire wingmen and they can use your ships I needed a few, and I am bound to be blown up a lot so need a spare or two while my others are replaced I can lend ships I am not using to other people or they can use them to help out on any missions if they like.

Yeah I think I went overboard by a lot, but it does look awesome and since they only drag you in a bit at t time it is easier to justify rather than buying it all in one go would be.

I really wish I had the finances to go hog-wild with this.

Just realised something that will quite possibly kill this game for me: folks whom can afford bigger and bettery ships. By relying on the in-game rewards system to upgrade my ship(s) and buy additional ships, others whom can afford to out-right purchase bigger and faster ships will get to the raw material first for mining, or find that loot before I, or whatever.

Game isn't out and I'm already feeling at a disadvantage. Hope this isn't truly going to be a "pay-to-win" type of game.

There is a limit of how much cash you can buy each day, and if you play the game and think it's bad, you are going to be able to set up your own server and either play by yourself or with your friends, but I trust CR to be able to balance the gameplay.

And that's always going to be the way. People that start playing a game before you in a MMO are always going to have some advantage.
If you start playing Eve or WOW, you're going to be easy prey for a veteran level 80 player ... that's just the way it is.

Though, CR have said in multiple interviews that it's not about pay 2 win, and he explains it far better than I do, so I won't even try to explain it

The one thing I find is going to be a issue is, "fleet battles" considering the poly's on the ship there's not going to be many ships in one system, and if there is it's going to be instanced.

Call me old fashioned, but there's no way you're going to have 10 constellations, 20 fighters etc in one area without the game grinding to a halt.

Cryengine will struggle to push the poly's.

That's my hope.

I'm not opposed to spending money in this game in the least, I just hope it is balanced. No desire to setup my own server either- far too lazy for that.

Anyhow, can't judge anything till the game is actually out and playable. Just reading about all these people with so many ships already, and here I'm just rocking the RSI Aurora MR. Humble beginnings... I'd like to start with just that and work my way up, I'm just afraid of how the odds might be stacked against me is all...

I do plan to play from day 1. So that's not the advantage I'm worried about. I'm well aware of that aspect of any MMO. I'm mostly concerned about folks with deeper pockets than mine having an unfair advantage over me. If I can't afford to drop $10k+, should that be held against me? Of even $5k or $500? I'm going to remain optimistic though that this will be reasonably balanced.

I've often wondered about this. Granted by 2015 the scope of hardware will be far greater than what we have now, and Chris has made it very clear that this is first and foremost a PC game. Want to play? You vey well may have to upgrade your 6 year old hardware first.

I think the engine can handle it just fine, I'm curious about what the specs will be though. Makes me even more confident in doing my Haswell-e build at the end of next year. Should be sufficient for this game, I'd hope.

Yeah someone starting out would be at a lesser disadvantage to start with, but it all depends on how much time they can put in since everything is buyable in the game with ingame money.

It takes apparently around 60 hours of playtime to get a constellation ship, which costs double to triple the current cost (in the equivalent ingame money $1 = 1000 imperial currency)

So you could get a awesome ship in a few weeks to a month or so at no physical cost. Even less if you could borrow someones ship that they aren't using to make more money at the start (players can rent / lend their ships to other players) I would assume some guilds will lend ships to help starter players out too. You also get some ingame money for completing Squadron 42 (the single player game which is out way before Star Citizen is)

You can also get ingame loans from the ingame banks (which you have to pay back of course) so you can get a different ship quicker.

There are also going to be around 60 ships in the game at launch so still lots of things for people to work towards. Only 15 have been seen so far.

Also your ship is your character in effect, unlike regular MMOs where it is your avatar. So some people will be sticking with the ship they start with as they like it and others will move on.

With everything being setup as a rock / paper / scissors type mechanic it isn't like there is one ship that is better than another at everything.

There are currently no LOD models for the ships so all the ships in the hangar are rediculously polygonny (yeah I just made that word up ), but the next version of Cryengine has auto making of LOD models so you can fit tons more ships on screen without it grinding to a halt. Current plans are for around 200 ships per battle (due mainly to all the network traffic)

This was amazing! TrueAudio made me think of InterWave (AMD's previous audio effort) and Aureal A3D. Couldn't be a more happy gamer C-:

Just incase there are some people that are interested in this game, I'll sum up the latest news about the game, or you could look at Star Citizen Con 2013:

Anyway, here is summary of some of the news from it:
The Retaliator Heavy Bomber and the Gladiator Bomber are up for sale (again) until Monday, and the Aurora variant and the Hornet variant will be up for sale also, until Monday.
The Avenger Advanced Hunter is also up for sale now.
The Avenger (for those who have pledged for it) and the fish tank will be in the hangar after next update(anytime soon).
New commercial for the F7C
New contests (design a ship), amazing $30 000 prize to winner. More info: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/c...great-starship
Ability to change outfit in hangar
