Default Best free VR stuff?

I borrowed an Oculus Rift CV1 from someone, but I don't know how long I can keep it. (Probably until the end of society as we know it.) I started with Google Earth and Valve's The Lab. I intend on perhaps buying two or three games, but before I do, I want to thoroughly test myself, the headset and my computer hardware. What are some great free VR experiences I should start with?

Zooma VR, 1943 Berlin Blitz, Accounting, Aircar, Deserving Life, Any of the Google Spolight stories, Nvidia VR Funhouse, Runes Forgotten Path, Waltz of the Wizard, VR Museum of fine art,VR Flush, Trials on Tatooine, Droid repair bay, Portal Stories VR (require Portal 2).

A lot are little more than tech demos but can still be fun.

If you like flight sims, DCS is free with 1 map and the training p-51 and the Su-25. It's fun and immersive just to take the p-51 up and fly around in VR to sight see.

Tons of free things to try:
  • If you want to test your VR legs, try a roller coaster game demo.
  • Star Wars Droid Repair demo is pretty well done.
  • Like mechs? This demo very much impressed: War Robots VR:Skirmish
  • Many scary demos if you like being scared.
  • Jurassic World:Blue is very pretty but non interactive.

Transpose on Steam is free during this Covid lockdown.

Ah yes, Transpose. I took out a light fitting playing Transpose. Hard overhead throw. Luckily the only VR induced damage I've caused.

Oh! I totally let go of my "I want it to be free" preference, ignored the warnings that it's not for VR rookies, and jumped all into Boneworks. Absolutely fabulous game, because it feels like a complete game and has so many experimental sides you can have fun with. The physics model is a little troublesome, but it opens up so many options, I love the game. Finished the campaign, and am playing around a little with its additional modes, but I'm also considering setting it aside for other games.

A friend of mine lent me his Oculus account, so I could play Robo Recall. It feels like a VR version of Virtua Cop (the classic on-rail SEGA shooters). It's pretty and it's fun in short bursts. I feel a bit like I do in DOOM16: you really rip and tear through the enemy robots continuously.

Next up is probably Half-Life: Alyx. I've toyed around with a few demos, and I'm really partial to games that feel modern on all accounts, instead of experimental and ugly or short tech demos.

Oh, and one more thing: playing in VR made me decide to upgrade from my GTX 1060 3GB to a GTX 1080 8GB (second hand). Sold my 1060, so it's a significant upgrade for "only" €200.

imo, Robo Recall is still the best VR game available, especially if you can play in a large open area. Sure, it's an arcade game, and it's kindof nonsense, but it's super fun, and really takes advantage of the medium, and I come back to it again and again.

Although, I have to say that after playing Alyx, I find myself wishing I could flick to pick up stuff, and i also miss using the joystick to turn... there's things about Robo Recall I wish were in Alyx as well though, like being able to teleport with both hands, or use the stick to control the angle of teleportation. It's definitely time to standardize basic controls in VR games.

I find Robo Recall to be on the simple side, both in terms of gameplay, but also in terms of how it uses VR. I don't have much to compare with of course, but the physicality of Boneworks means it uses VR much more: aiming down the sight (because you must, not because you can), melee combat (not just grabbing, but actual punching, knives, swords, hammers, axes), reloading weapons manually... But RR is fun for what it is.

There are a lot of mods by the way, so if you're still playing and you wish for more options in terms of locomotion, check out the Robo Recall forums or subreddit!

Not free but I think a hell of a deal at the moment. I thought $60 was a good deal for Viveport Infinity around black Friday. They are offering it for $27 for a year of access now. I renewed for another year at that price.
