Default Good monitor for playing PC games?

I've heard various things about LCD, Flatscreen, CRT, etc monitors and how some are better than others for video games. My 19" Hitachi is making Rice Krispie noises every time I turn it on and off so its days are numbered I believe.

So what would you guys recommend for a new relatively inexpensive monitor ~ $300?

Are LCD monitors good for gaming?

Thanks

LCDs with 8ms or less response time are good IMO

All modern LCD's do well on gaming. Though there are lot of differences on different techniques. Don't trust too much on *ms numbers, there isn't any standard on how it is measured. Any good quality display under 16ms will do nicely, but if you're going for cheaper TN+Film/MVA panels that has steeper ms curve you will want fastest you can get. If you can get S-IPS panel, overall far better than others but is found only on 20"+ displays these days.

if you are a gaming freak and can still deal with the negatives of a crt(heat, eye strain, weight, footprint) i would say look around for a nice 19 inch or 21 inch diamondtron (or fd trin) crt. (nec sony, mitsubishi) truthfully my lone choice and saying for you to stay crt is based upon the many different resolutions you can run on a crt. on an lcd there are usually only one or two that you can run without having to have a smaller screen or jaggies everywhere.

Contrary to my opinion in the other thread (L90D+ or 193p+), due to the budget constraint listed ($300) I actually agree with this recommendation.

I put down $300 just as a ballpark, but I'm willing to spend more on a good monitor.

I might be more inclined to go with a CRT because I already have one, the space is alloted for on my desk because of this, there many resolutions (1600x1200 helps multi-tabling 4 online poker games) and for the same price I can get a lot larger screen than a LCD. It also appears that 1280x1024 is the highest resolution for any 19" LCD.

I didn't realize some of the drawbacks of LCD's. There are not too many, but there are a few: price, screen resolution restrictions, etc.

Thanks for the feedback.

Like I wrote in your other thread, I'd suggest a CRT for gaming hands down, much better resolutions/refresh rates to choose, picture quality is amazing, and they're incredibly affordable. My ViewSonic E92f+SB flat screen 19" CRT cost me $200, I'm sure you can get a much better deal...
