Angry Argh, the Radeon 9800 SE blows!

Well, after my 9700 non-pro was no good, I went ahead and got a 9800 SE, since they are both in about the same price range, I was expecting similar performance.

NOT SO!

My 3D Mark 2003 scores dropped by over 1000 points going from a 9700 non-pro to a 9800 SE. In some of the tests (like that one that looks like Doom 3), I was getting about 20 fps with the 9700 non-pro and with the 9800 SE, I'm lucky if it surpasses 5 fps! I was getting those kinds of numbers with my Geforce Ti 4200!!

Word to the wise, stay clear of the 9800 SE cards, they are useless junk!!

I'm going to see if I can return this crap.

Try to unlock the pipelines. The 9800SE should perform quite like a 9500 non-pro.

Also there might just be a driver installation bug, sometimes performance is skewed by moving to another ATI card and not completely reinstalling the drivers.

The 9800SE is simply a 9800 with 4 pipelines disabled. There are two versions, one with 128-bit memory bus and one with 256. They are clocked at default 9800p speeds (378/337) and can be flashed to 9800p to enable the exra 4 pipes. From what I've seen, people have been having only 50/50 chance of success. A lot of the 9800SE have bad pipes, so they artifact when flashed.

Well, I tried the software mod and got the checkerboard effect. Not good. Do you think if I flash it it will make a difference?

Why did they name it SE instead of LE?

It's like ATI is trying to confuse customers.

Alright then, I'm returning this crap.

You know what pisses me off? That ATI is selling this crap for $200, when it offers the same performance as a $70 Geforce Ti 4200 card.

Ehh...A 9800 Se would run circles around a Ti4200 with FSAA and AF enabled. Lets not even mention Gamma Corrected AA, DX9 support.

I agree the naming is poor, and if you are not happy take it back...but a Ti4200 is no match for even a cripled 9800 SE.
I had a 9500 NP, AND IT ran circles around a Ti4200
