Joystick Battlefield 4 patch brings Mantle rendering, CPU performance improvements, tweaking

A significant patch has been released for Battlefield 4 this morning, finally bringing the Mantle rendering API to AMD users. Whether or not you're on AMD, there's a few added tweaking options and CPU multi-core optimization for everyone (curing the stuttering and low framerates that occurred previously on some setups), and tile-based compute shader lighting optimization for NVIDIA users for improved GPU performance.

Mantle won't actually be available for use until AMD releases its 14.1 beta drivers today or tomorrow. You'll be able to find them here (where you can always find the latest release).

DICE technical director Johan Andersson says Mantle improvements will come in future updates, but they're already quite happy with what they've achieved (their testing indicates a 14-58% performance improvement depending on the scene).

As for new tweak options, “Thread.MaxProcessorCount” settings in User.cfg determines how many CPU cores are to be used in-game, “Render.DrawScreenInfo 1” in the command console now shows new info about the GPU, CPU, and renderer, and “PerfOverlay.FrameFileLogEnable” in the command console records frame time latency and saves it as a .csv file (I'm hoping to use this in a future Mantle article).

The big non-technical change is an overhaul to DMRs, which should now be significantly more viable.
