No idea why it installed on its own, but it should've shown up as a separate link on the WU page in the Settings app, and you should've had to actually click that link to kick off the install.

Or at least that's the behavior I saw on my brother's PC that I just helped him set up. I installed the Pro edition of 1909 on it this past Thursday and pulled down all the updates, and then sometime after I powered it back on the following day, the upgrade was there when I went to check for updates again. But it wasn't installing on its own, and AFAIK it's still there waiting for him to choose to install it. I didn't tweak/disable anything on the machine as far as WU goes, either (it's completely stock).

The first attempt should've been enough to make you wary of trying it a second time, much less a third.

Seriously, though... this is why I still don't do upgrades, not even with Win10.

Oh it eventually loaded on the first 2 after jumping through hoops, 4 times on the 1st PC, 2 times on the 2nd PC, and I give up on the 3rd PC. I can confirm Ultra fast boot is broke and also some odd login screen non sense like other people have got here, although I haven't seen it since turning off Ultra fast boot.

It should be disabled no matter what. It is the source of many problems because it doesn't always load drivers or reset hardware properly. Specially when you are updating those drivers.

For the record, my HTPC (4570 + R7 250) went like a hot knife through butter...

Lappy was a different story.

Even I as I was reinstalling 2004 was again downloading and preparing to install on it's own... (From a 1909 install USB). And this is with AUOptions set to 2 in the registry...
So I postponed feature update 365 days

I tried a 2nd time on my work laptop and its just plain out a no go, blue screened again on setup. then after all that and the tool gives you the go ahead on the install, I access Windows update under settings and it states its not quite ready for my laptop yet! Thanks for wasting my time Microsoft with your update tool, shouldn't it tell me the same thing before I even start.

Also as I have read around there is some freezing or not responding going on from time to time. It’s not all the time but occasionally. I had none of these issues with 1909.

It makes startup a few seconds faster as you dont have to wait looking at the Bios go through its startup routine.

I'm only interested in the version 2004 update for WSL 2, but it's not showing up as an update option yet, so I must be blocked for the time being. I wish there were a way to get WSL 2 without the rest of version 2004.

I think you're talking about the fast boot option that you can enable in the BIOS (and that keeps you from being able to get back into the BIOS unless you boot into it from Windows)... fast startup is a form of hibernation that saves your state to the disk and boots faster after a complete shutdown.

Yep. Only one reason why is I disabled it is because some hardware aren't working boot up properly especially for my RX Vega 56 that caused a few fps lower in some games and plus I already have a SSD, so I really don't see the difference. It is already fast boot up anyway.

Finally turned off fast boot. Only 1-2 seconds longer to boot from SSD and I now see so much more available memory vs fast boot startup.

That being said Windows 2004 has been smooth sailing on both my desktop and laptop.

Theres a few freebies out there, rufus and a couple other things... but now creating another recovery tool which is taking over an hour to usb drive right now... man slow as molasses. Tried a windows install usb and the tools on that didnt work.

Glad I was able to stop the update on the old htpc. No more automatic updates for me...

It might work for a few but, this POS needs to be gone over by Microsoft, having had issues with 3 completely different PC's, there's something wrong with this POS.

My Windows Update screen says my PC "isn't ready" for the May 2020 update but gives no reason why.

I've taken a full backup image of my boot drive just in case Windows decides I AM ready and takes a huge crap on my hard drive.

FFS I cant regain this drive... cant format it even when trying to remove the write protect on it...

1. Open a Command prompt by clicking Start, typing command, and clicking Command Prompt.

2. Type diskpart and press Enter.

3. Type list volume and press Enter.

4. Type select volume #, where # is the number of the drive that's giving you the "write-protected" error. In my case, I ended up typing select volume 3.

5. Type attributes disk clear readonly and press Enter.

6. Type exit and press Enter.

Doesnt work...

Tried usb recovery and win 10 boot usb but none of the MS tools work..

Screw it ordered a new nvme drive from newegg... kingston a2000 1tb. Has some good reviews for a value drive. Much faster than the intel p600 512 gb drive that is so far irretrievable that it will replace. Really unnerving that a win update can bork a drive so hard tho. I mean Ive always been able to format a drive and reinstall but not this...

In case anyone else gets fubared by bad updates theres an easy way to force win10 to stop all updates and give you manual control over them:

https://www.itechtics.com/easily-ena...-home-edition/

I just added gpedit to win home on the htpc and it works fine.

Otherwise if you just pause you will be forced to update everything that has accumulated before you can pause it again. And pauses only go about a month so its easy to forget to renew it before it ends.

While I wait for the new drive to come in I was wondering if anyone here in the know knew how to prevent windows from making the boot drive write protected? Either during installation or after? Im starting to accumulate otherwise physically fine hds, 4 so far in the last 8-10 years, that cant boot and cant be formatted.

Just rma'ed the p600 nvme drive to intel. I was lucky still on warranty till Dec 2021. But you could tell they didnt want me to in the tech chat and that this was another drive by update by microshaft but the guy had no answer to crc errors preventing the drive from having its read only status removed under diskpart attributes which could be due to a failing drive.

Wonder how this will pan out Ive never sent anything to intel for RMA before.

I wouldnt be so pissed at another 100$ bricked drive if it wasnt for the fact I have to take part in a ~200 connections zoom videochat for the union this Friday. We dont do that **** everyday here and am not cool on doing it on an old htpc. Absolutely worst timing ever.

If you disable WU via group policy, I highly recommend using the Show/Hide Updates troubleshooter (wushowhide.diagcab) to preview what updates are available for your machine every month. It lets you preemptively hide any updates you don't want, so it effectively lets you choose what gets pushed to your machine when you manually check for updates.

PC is back on the new Kingston a2000 1tb nvme drive and seems ok with up to date windows 2004... mulling removing write protect just in case it nukes again tho this is a fresh install.

I suppose even if I took it off the next update would just turn it on again. Kingston drive is snappier than the old intel P600. So thats nice at least.

First world problems ...
