![]() My T420s has Thunderbolt! Guess it must be the TB3 controller, hopefully Lenovo deals with it. Though their warranty support is pretty awesome, so I suspect if it's under warranty it'll be no issue. For out of warranty machines though... I hope they extend support. Apple has some wild issues with their TB3 controllers blowing holes in mobos. I wonder how many people are plugging in shotty low quality USB-C cables that barely or don't meet spec. I've had a few cheap cables that make poor contact and if you try to pump large amounts of power over them you'll kill the port. HP locks their USB-C ports to only output 15W or accept at max 65W, with some severe charging restrictions. I don't think it's a sole source issue, which is likely why Lenovo has pushed firmware updates which likely tighten up the charger/cable requirements. So it won't fix the ports but maybe extend their lives.

Who's fault would any of this be? having to be pretty anal a bout which charging cable to use kind of defeats the purpose of a universal port......

USB-C has had to have some really strict requirements put in place because cables and connectors like to get hot and smoke. It's like a seller putting ends that trick a charger into thinking the cable is a 100W cable but is really only meant for maybe 30W. Sure it works for a bit but then it goes wrong. Oh and the ends are built as cheap as possible to pay for those resistors. People being cheap is the problem. They'll buy a $3000 machine then scoff at $100 for the charger, figuring they'll just buy 4 of those $25 ones from that cheap seller... ![]()
