Robo Recall is amazing, especially if you play in a large open area. Max out the guardian, and the VR hardware evaporates and you are just fighting robots in a big open cityscape.

I really think Robo Recall is the ultimate expression of VR 1.0 interactions. 360 degree combat, teleportation anywhere in the environment, fluid real-life movement if you have a big enough play space, and lots of sandbox style gameplay that includes grabbing & shooting things.
  • Grab guns
  • Shoot enemy robots
  • Grab an enemy robot
  • Use robot as a shield
  • Shoot other robots while using robot as shield
  • Shoot off your shield-robot's head, then throw head at enemy robots
  • Tear arm off of shield robot, then melee enemy robots with that arm
  • Dodge bullets
  • Catch enemy bullets in mid-air then throw them back
  • Use shotgun as a paddle to ping-pong bullets back at enemies
  • Juggle enemy robots in mid-air by repeatedly shooting them in the air
  • Teleport behind robots to sneak up on them
  • etc. etc.

I can't gush enough about Robo Recall. It's fast, frantic, often silly, and a fully arcade-style experience. Not much story, not super long, but TONS of replayability.

Sounds great as long as you have the room, what if you are confined to a small square?

some decent looking games, still on the fence for the Quest... what are some of the most anticipated titles coming out fairly soon? Say within the next year or so...

Still great if you're stationary. But playing in a large space is really a transcendent experience.

The teleportation system works well for movement, but it feels like you're playing a video game... like this constant reminder that takes you out of the experience. Playing in a large space frequently allows you to completely forget that you're in a video game at all. You still hit the boundaries of the guardian every once in awhile, but you'll often go long periods of time (like 30-60 seconds) without ever seeing the guardian.

I would love to see them expand the maximum guardian size even larger. I think it's currently 30'x30', but if they could expand it to something like an indoor basketball court, it would take it to a whole 'nother level. Imagine throwing in some friends for local multiplayer in the same space

Pavlov should be out later this month. There's also a Boneworks game announced. Those are the big ones I'm waiting for. I'm also hoping that Bigscreen will stop sucking.

Here's a video that showcases a bunch of upcoming stuff... although some of this has already launched.

How good is using VirtualDesktop to stream SteamVR? One review back in June mention control issues at times. Is this still a problem? I am seriously considering getting a Quest. I like the idea of having a mobile VR and ability to play SteamVR games.

In my short time with it I haven’t noticed many issues. I was amazed how well it worked. It even worked well for me on a non AC router which is recommended. I decided to pick an AC router up because of how well it worked on my old router so I could connect at full speed.

So I got a small credit from Oculus for joining, and I'm looking at a couple of the 'cheaper' games to make the credit go the farthest: Virtual Virtual Reality vs Space Pirate Trainer.

The Space Pirate one looks fun, but also kind of boring since it's an arcade shooter. VVR I don't know enough about. Any thoughts on one versus the other?

I'd probably choose Virtual Virtual Reality over Space Pirate Trainer. Space Pirate Trainer is basically a VR version of Space Invaders... it has a free demo, if you want to try it out.

Yea, I got that credit as well and threw it at space pirate trainer as I like old Arcade Galaga shooters.

All the reviews on the Quest make it sound like once you go wireless you never want to go back. But all the videos I watch in the reviews the frame rates and graphic fidelity drop from wired is harsh. I am not sure I want to make that trade. I am thinking if I do not try my friends Quest I will not get hooked on the wireless and stay happy with what I have till some one releases the best of both worlds.

Plus right now with buying Christmas presents for the fam and surprise medical bill I am so dang broke! I was thinking that extra Samsung headset was a silly purchase when I found out about the medical bill mix-up.

But holy cow that Quest looks nice!!!

Does anyone have the USB3.0 attachment to make it like a Rift S?

Are there reported frame drops? Interesting. I've not noticed anything weird going wireless on my setup. That said, I am running a 5Ghz N with a 40mhz wide channel network near my PC and my main gaming PC is hardwired into that router... however my kids have played on a much older system I have for them (with a 980 Ti) which is itself wireless, and it's been fine. Only time you can really see any loss in frames is if you are using the WiFi on that computer to download a steam game while playing a VR game.

So far I've played my Quest three ways: With the built-in processor, with the Anker USB-C to USB 3.5 link cable, and wirelessly using VR Desktop and each way has looked as smooth as the last.

I've been playing with it a bit. It's not an attachment, just a USB 3.0 cable. It works, and it looks good. But I get a ton of stutter, depending on the game. I'm using an AMD gpu, which isn't supported yet, so you'll prolly be fine if you're on nvidia. I've played enough to be convinced that it'll be perfectly smooth once the beta ends.

Yea on my 1080Ti it works perfectly, But I dont care, because I cant do the cable anymore. Going to use Revive to play Lone Echo through Virtual Desktop through the Oculus store. Played a short while and it seemed to be good. Asguard on the other hand through Virtual Desktop and Revive was a bit iffy so I got a refund on Asguard.

That is correct! No longer can stand a stinking cable pulling when I turn my head or move just a little to far away.
I have not experienced Frame drops either through using the Quest to process a game or my PC to process over wireless through SteamVR. Which your getting close to the full deal as your PC is doing the processing.

I wonder how people would feel with no cable and a bit more weight so they can add in more horse power. I'd have to try it, I think they should try no wire with 3 or so upgrades in GPU power that you could plug into the unit to give you great frame rate and graphics but say add a few extra grams... I think my neck could get a bit sore maybe not...

I would think most guys would be okay with a little extra weight but I bet they are trying to design to satisfy the 5% lowest strength women... that's what we did in the automotive industry, we designed for the 5% smallest woman to the 95% largest man...

Here's a video that showcases a bunch of upcoming stuff... although some of this has already launched.
Quite a few of these are on the Viveport Infinity service which you can play on the Quest through SteamVR.

I dont see the need for that unless you dont have a PC you can stream from. They should be working both ways. They should buy up Virtual Desktop. Make it even better then it is now. Which is dam good already. Make it so they can stream the games from their store(Ones that require a PC). Also as things advance upgrade the headset hardware without any more weight for those that dont have PC's that are powerful and they would be giving everyone the best of both worlds all wireless at the same weight.

Actually one of the most popular Quest mods is adding a fairly heavy counter-weight to the back of the headstrap (usually a usb battery pack). This is how I play, btw. There seems to be a strong consensus that the issue is not that the Quest is too heavy, but that the weight distribution puts too much of the weight on the front of the headset.

Ideally, they'd separate the compute unit & battery, and mount it on the back of the headstrap. Then you'd get better weight distribution without having to add an additional counter-weight.

yeah, none of these game are motivating me to buy VR yet, I can't handle going 20 year back in time in graphics or poor clunky interfaces.

For me to buy VR I am waiting for good VR implementation in any of the following type of game:
  • An update GTA or similar game
  • A new Skyrim, I've seen the original used as a selling point, 8/9 year year old game
  • A nice looking dungeon crawler
  • Nice looking Space game, where I can walk around, A Star Trek type where the player can do flying and away missions
  • A good looking immersive R rated zombie apocalypse, I would settle with LFD1 graphics with a dark setting and open world. wonder if Dying Light will have a good VR interface, although the parkour might make me puke. Dying Light without all the roof top jumping would be good.

Wonder how long I'll have to wait...

Won't happen on the Quest I suppose for a long time but I'd settle for the wired if I could get any of the above...

Arizona Sunshine VR has a fun CO-OP mode and the action can get fairly sporty for a zombie apocalypse game.

As for walking around in VR I have tried that in VR and I still prefer the teleport for now.

Have you looked at Eve VR for a space sim in VR?

I think this source is pretty good: https://www.vrdesktop.net/

It's from VirtualDesktop and shows basically what you will need on both sides:

PC-Side: Just the small server client. It's just a remote desktop app that needs to run to connect. I don't leave it running all the time and just start it up with default settings when I want to VR.

Quest-Side: A bit more complicated. You need to purchase VirtualDesktop from within the Quest. Then you need to enable Developer Mode and use Sidequest to sideload the version of VD that allows SteamVR (that is all here: https://sidequestvr.com/#/setup-howto found on the Sidequest page also mentioned in the vrdesktop instructions).

After that, it's basically just turning the server on the PC, starting VirtualDesktop on the headset and selecting SteamVR. Voila.

Note: If you don't want to pay (by buying VirtualDesktop) there is an alternative way which is supposedly not as good, but good enough, with a free app called ALVR which can be sideloaded via Sidequest. It's the same deal: A client that opens a remote desktop session on your PC, it just requires a bit more fiddling. I've never done it this way, but there are videos about it if you're interested: https://youtu.be/Tk9Qx07I2Pg
