Default Buy advice please. GPU for nephew.

I'm going to hook him up with a 144hz display. 1440p.

I have these choices:
New 5700XT (bargain option)
New 2070 Super
Used 2080 (non Ti)

I'm leaning towards the 5700XT, assuming the black screen issues are solved at this point and I'm not sure yet on that. The other two will set me back at least $100 more, and are faster, but not by an extreme margin.

What say you rage?

I'll be helping to support this remotely over teamviewer or some other RD solution. When he's here, we'll be assembling and installing together.

CPU will be a 2700X, 16GB gskill PC3200, and a X470. 850w psu.

What res is the monitor?

I'd say 2070 Super to play with DLSS and RTX.

I'm gonna stick with the 2070 Super. I think that's the gaming bang for the buck right now. I know AMD cards are cheaper but they lack the features I mentioned and them drivers.....

I can get the used RTX 2080 for about $40 more than the new 2070 super fyi. If that makes a diff.

Hmm...... you sure it's in good condition? 2070 Super as fast as a non super 2080.

Does your monitor have freesync or G-sync? Don't buy a freesync monitor with a Nvidia card. I'm sure you know that just thought I would throw that out.

Haven't decided on the monitor yet. That will be the last item we end up getting.

Can you negotiate the price of the 2080 down a bit.

I'd rather go new for the warranty as well. Either way, both will serve you well.

Why not? Freesync monitors work with gsync now.

I would not buy any monitor that's not freesync or gsync.

Possibly a little bit, maybe another $25 or so. Would be it though. They are going for around 550-650 used on ebay depending on the model.

I don't want to low ball him though, it's a personal friend, so a polite pass would be better than what may be considered an insult lol

You can't go wrong either way but new in box and warranty for less? I'm in.

I have this monitor. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...e?ie=UTF8&th=1

but looks like out of stock. But it worked great with my RX Vega 56. It got an IPS and I don't see any ghosting at all in CSGO and Doom Eternal.

If your nephew needs to play sooner. Just grab a 5700XT since it's bargain option. But RNDA 2 is coming soon in a few months, so i don't know if you can wait for that but I'll assume you might upgrade to that later.

EDIT: What games do your nephew play? It depends on which games that gpu that will run better.

I would rather go with new to be honest.

A 5700XT is a solid option and it seems to be gaining speed like usual as AMD's drivers get better.

There's also some decent freebies that come with the 5700XT.

DLSS 2.0 is basically Radeon Image Sharpening... So that's a break even.

RTX is kind of iffy, it makes for some sparkles but it still has a wack to performance.

Nvidia finally stopped requiring their port corrupting hardware for G-Sync, so Freesync works on NV.

I am a new card guy unless you have skills. NV's current balancing junk likes to go pop apparently on the new cards.

So honestly...

Which 5700XT are you looking at?

An easy performance boost if you have a reference based one is to flash the 50th AE vBIOS.

Well, my buddy won't get bent if I pass on the 2080.
So at this point, it's down to either an MSI 2070 Super or the MSI 5700 XT.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/msi-nvi...?skuId=6362412
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/msi-mec...?skuId=6374966

These two are in stock locally, and I would prefer to give them my business.

Well, you know my recommendation.

Also, Best Buy has a good return policy so if you get a card and you don't like it you can exchange it for the other one.

Well, after doing some more reading, it looks questionable to me that the 5700 XT black screen issue is really solved. It's hard to tell for certain, but since this is a remote system when he takes it back home with him minimizing issues is a priority.

So, leaning strongly towards the 2070 Super.

Only other thing I have on my mind, is if I go to 1080p instead of 1440p, I can probably get by with a 2060 instead. Question is, for his first real computer, is it worth it going to 1440p for him.

I have no idea what kind of games he's going to play honestly. He's played mostly stuff on console up to this point.

Thx Acroig, I did some research plus the link you posted it looks like compatibility jumped up since i last looked at this. Its not perfect but if I was in the market for a new monitor I would give it a shot for sure to save the dollars. Looks like it will not work if you connect using HDMI. Still great news.

well the 2080 it's what i got and i can oc it to 2080 super territory if i have to never usually do though.

The 2070 super each and every day over a 5700xt. Too many issues. Gi bro and Enforcer will chime in on the wonkyness of the card.

2080 OC runs 12-15% less than a 2080 Ti OC. Can’t go wrong.

Running 1080p will be easier in the long run. You could even go 1080p ultrawide *shrug*

I really wish AMD would un**** their drivers but the 5700XT is still plagued by some really silly issues.

I'd grab the 2080 or 2070 Super. The 2080 is not 12-15% to a 2080TI OC, though.
