Default K.I.L.E.R.S Java Signature

Quote:
Since around 2002, Java on average is less than 5% slower than the best C++ code. For most applications (including games) java is within 1% of the speed of C++ code; many of the improvements of the last few years have concentrated on making up the performance gap, so that now - finally! - Java is a realistic practical alternative even in games development - where RAW SPEED is usually the most important factor
LOL.... got some benchmarks to back these up with some source code?

BTW, 4 days ago I did some java vs VISUAL C++ 6.0 tests in integer, floating point, trig and file IO. Using the latest java runtimes. The reason I did this was because some site on the internet had posted some benchmark results which I and a few other people thought were incorrect. Luckily this guy posted source code also, so I went ahead and tested.

According to this guys test java was faster at integer, much slower at trig (something to do with increased accuracy in java?) and pretty much slightly slower than Visual C in the other tests.

Not only did the C and C++ versions produced from Visual C outdo the java , it out did them by a lot. The Integer test finished more than 2 seconds before the java one (he said the java one was faster), the results were like 5700ms for the VC one and ~7800ms for the Java one. Overall for all the tests, it took approx 30seconds to complete in C, 80 seconds to complete in java, on my 2.2GHz Athlon XP.

java will never, ever, be faster than unoptimized C++ except in these cases :-

1)java runtime detects CPU optimizations and applies them in extremly optimized ways (.NET does this, java did it first but still isn't that good at it, neither is .NET).
2)java's default libraries are optimized more than the C++/C ones. This is already happening, java beats C/C++ in some algorithms due to this.

The whole point remains that 100% optimized java will never, ever be as fast as 100% optimized C++. 100% optimized java, generally at this stage is 80% equivelant to unoptimized C++ at a speed level.

and here is some older benchmarks, not as applicable, but still.

http://www.flat222.org/mac/bench/

When I get back from work I may post the source code and URL to the original benchmark site.

So K.I.L.E.R. please remove the BS from your sig.

Was programmed in Java.

Some areas were very efficent.. others were not.

Play the demo, and decide to be impressed or not.

If Java can get to 80% of the speed CPU wise that C++ can, it does not surprise me that they can do wonderful things with it. That isn't my problem with his sig though, what he is saying is incorrect.

With games, depending on the game, you might not even be CPU dependant and hence whether it is in java or C++ there will be no difference in performance.

Pistolgrip, go to Javagaming.Org and get your info from there.
ICBF mothering you. My tits aren't for sucking on.

Shouldn't this be in the programming forum?

Ah yeah.. I think I know your type... can only program scripts and java? C++ and ASM a bit too hard?

I will be posting source in a few hours, hopefully you can learn how to use a C/C++ compiler before then and POST your own results from the source I post. Since you seem a bit on the "I don't like defending my incorrect sig" side, I might even post some binaries to make it easy for you. I wish you took the same attitude you are now defending it, that you took whilst writing it.

Again, whilst the latter part of your sig talks purely about gaming performance showing very little difference, the first part says java is roughly 5% slower than C/C++ on average. Wrong. Maybe in some games (and even in these sorts of games where Java/C++ has no difference, I doubt it's Java being slower causing the ~5%, it's probably the hardware/api layer not being as optimized for Java), but please.

I have nothing to prove to you. Your opinions of me are meaningless. If you want results, get them yourself.

If that was true you wouldn't of posted, thanks for showing me you do care what I think

I will get the results, thanks for supporting me. I always seem to (get the results) in these sorts of cases. Even though you "don't care", all the people you are trying to influence with your java signature will, I think.

Eh? I care? Really? Responding to your posts means I care? I never knew that. Thanks for educating me on all these matters.

What's Java and C++? What's C#?
No really? I care about what you think. You are right. I love you more than I love my family. Thanks for telling me what to think and what I know and don't know.
I really can't live my life without you.

Don't worry, I can't get results without you.

kthxbi
