CATALYST maker is still being judged by the masses

Default CATALYST 3.4 now available

HERE IT IS, what everyone has been waiting for. The delay was due to the fact that GI Bro has come to visit me today at work and has slowed me down all day with his continual "lets go get a coffee" routine.

Nonetheless now the 3.4's are available and there will be updates to:

1) the driver
2) the Multimedia Center
3) the remote wonder

For anyone who has a RADEON 9500, 9600, 9700 or 9800 make sure you head over to www.divx.com for a RADEON enhanced version of their player.

Also make sure you check out all the new stuff in Multemedia Center (EAZYLOOK) is really cool for the home PC concept

oh ya and did I mention there a few performance boosts and some bug fixes spread throughout

Enjoy and as usual let me know what you think or any bugs you may find at the CATALYST CREW feedback page
http://www.ati.com/online/catalystcrew/

Off to work on CATALYST 3.5 and another coffee with GI Bro

I've got a mirror up at www.noxtek.com just for Rage3D and DriverHeaven guys.

Terry, thanks SO much for delivering the goods today. I've had such a horrible week that this is a godsend, it's gonna feel so good to geek out and play with new drivers.

Any indication of whether 3.4 offers improved support for Windows Media Center Edition?

Well I was getting really worried that the whole bunch of fans here would be gruesomely dissapointed in ATI, but they finalyly did it... with 15 minutes to spare

Respect goes out to Da`Nacho for hosting the files on a Nice server, as ATI site did not have files yet.

Looks like the Escape bug was fixed.... but the FPS problem everyone was experience is there and worse then ever... Instead of going from 100->50fps, it now goes from 100-40fps.
Tons of people are having the problem.... but it's obviously not an issue for ATI, from the responses we've gone. I could have lives with the escape bug... but I can't play in CAL with this problem. Sorry guys.
I will give it another 10 days for a fix, if not im getting a ti4800SE.

Like dementor, I too am experiencing unacceptable framerates in Half-Life. I loaded up Half-Life, loaded the final level, and at 800x600 with all opengl image quality settings reduced to minimum, I'm getting a whopping 48 fps.

I have the screenshot if anyone wants it.

I really hate to be amongst the first slinging complaints this soon after a driver release... but I feel I have amply demonstrated a problem, and have allowed more than enough time to see it fixed.

I'm quite disappointed.

I am not saying that ATI should not have to support them......but dang I cant get a VCR tape to work in my Sony DVD player at home.

I mean what was a hot system when Half Life came out? P2-350, with 64megs of ram an a Diamond Monster 3DFX 1 card, using DX3 and Windows 95?

Congrats on the release, not tested much yet.

Something that bother me though is that there still isnt OpenGL-Refreshrate override included. Is that feature still sheduled to be included sometime. Can you tease me a bit by throwing some hints?

Ok..Ok.....Here is my take on the 3.4's. I have not seen a significant improvement as far as speed increase. I will post my before and after UT2003 benchmarks at the end of post. There are 2 major fixes that REALLY have made my day. The REAL ONE Player bug is not fixed. Before it would crash my system every time I tried to play a REAL file. The second fix is in VICE CITY, it no longer crashes in cutscenes. YAY. Ok here is the bad part..I cannot play MY FAVORITE GAME NOW!!!
Madden2003 Crashes to desktop with the 3.4's. It will not let me even get to the options screen. It loads, refreshes and then it completely crashes back to desktop. I SO HOPE THEY FIX THIS SOON. Anyone else with Madden having same problem?
Here are the ut2003 benchmarks.
I am playing 1600x1200 2xaa, and AF set to app. pref.
These are with 3.2s
18.815996 / 41.505947 / 78.556389 fps rand[7709]
Score = 41.510788 (Antalus)

Score = 54.724174(Asbestos)
0.901141 / 30.173325 / 267.920410 fps rand[30235]
Score = 30.171583(Inferno)
These are the 3.4's
11.326696 / 41.393055 / 78.385559 fps rand[7709]
Score = 41.398903(Antalus)

The setting for 'DirectX Override Refresh Rate' actually has worked for both D3D and OpenGL since Cat 3.1. The driver dev team just hasn't updated the text for the pulldown option yet so it still says 'DirectX'.

Why does it require a special divx player? Why can't it work on the divx filter so all media players can benifit from it?

Well, y'see, there's this game called Counter-Strike, and it uses the Half Life engine to run. You may have heard of it...

Quote:

Even more reason that anything shy of 100FPS on a 9700PRO is unacceptable. I was getting 100FPS steady on my "old" Geforce2 Ultra 64, so I don't see why my $400 9700Pro can't keep up.

I want 3.4 to work, because otherwise I spent $400 unwisely. So far, I'd rate my whole "ATI experience" as somewhere between laughable and annoying. I've never had so much trouble with once piece of hardware since I started working on computers back in 1980, and I'll even include TRS-80's, Apollos, and PA-RISC systems in that mix. I was warned, repeatedly, not to buy an ATI product because of the driver support, but I was impressed with the numbers the 9700Pro was posting and I wanted to give the underdog a chance figuring that the old "We're number 2, so we try harder" effect would come into play. So far, the driver warnings have been painfully prophetic. I'm still holding on to hope that the 3.4's will be better, but if these drivers are dogs, then this will be the last product I ever buy from ATI, and I'll make sure never to recommend ATI products to anyone. ATI lured me over as a crossover buyer with what looks to be a very excellent product; I'd like to see that product become what I hoped it would be.
