It cant make your 3d mark any higher cos it works on opengl not D3d.

Try it on Quake 3 or a Quake 3 engined game like RTCW, see how many more Fps you get.

Are the FireGL drivers are bug-free as the 9700's normal drivers?

I've found one problem already. These FireGL drivers don't support the resolution of 1280x960, while the 9700 drivers do.

Running in OpenGL mode, UT2003 just gives me this error.

Quote:
UT2003 Build UT2003_Build_[2003-01-23_16.56]

OS: Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)
CPU: AuthenticAMD PentiumPro-class processor @ 1732 MHz with 511MB RAM
Video: Fire GL Z1 Athlon (3DNow!)

General protection fault!

History: FOpenGLIndexBufferATI::Reallocate <- FOpenGLIndexBufferATI::AddIndices <- FOpenGLRenderInterface::SetDynamicIndexBuffer <- ATerrainInfo::Render <- RenderLevel <- FLevelSceneNode::Render <- RenderLevel <- FLevelSceneNode::Render <- RenderLevel <- FLevelSceneNode::Render <- RenderLevel <- FLevelSceneNode::Render <- FPlayerSceneNode::Render <- UGameEngine:raw <- UWindowsViewport::Repaint <- UWindowsClient::Tick <- ClientTick <- UGameEngine::Tick <- UpdateWorld <- MainLoop
For some reason, it also says FireGL Z1 when I chose X1 in the properties as well as Windows showing both the primary and secondary as X1. Not to mention it says my CPU is 1732Mhz when it's a 2400+ running at 2Ghz (WINCPUID confirms 2Ghz as well).

I've done further testing. These drivers render MoHAA completely unplayable. From my normal 70-90fps, I now get a constant around 25fps or so. These drivers are terrible, they must not be optimized at all for games, and only for CAD and rendering programs.

It goes to show that the FireGL is for OpenGL CAD and rendering work only, not for games.

this is kinda off topic, but does anyone else have the problem with no 16 bit aa on opengl games? mine was working (at least i THINK it was, i remember it working) but i reinstalled the old drivers cause i noticed some speed differences, and when i reinstalled the cat 3.1s i didnt have 16 bit aa in opengl, and its confusing me!! (it works in d3d just fine)

this is how i see it, play all games in 16 bit with aa on and its like overclocking cause it goes so much faster and doesnt look any different! except for the occassional disappearing textures that are seen from really far away like in rtcw

Default 9700 non pro

I converted my 9700 non pro TX into both the Z1 and X1.

The Z1 is meant for the 9500, and clashed with my card a lot. while running UT2003 in opengl, i could barely see the screen due to the heavy glitches and what looked comparable to ram artifacts.

The X1 ran much better for about 10 minutes. With 1600x1200, max settings and 4x antialiasing and 4x anios. I was getting 50-60 frame a second in UT2003 opengl!! It relaly ran amazing. I tried to minimize it, and i got a restart After that point, the it didn't run very well at all, and i had so many restarts I was lucky to get the drivers off at all

I lost about 1500 marks in 3dmark03, as of course, they aren't optimized for D3D. Gettin' ready to try Doom3 and see what happens.

I think the news blurb is kind of misleading... OpenGL games played for **** after I installed the FireGL drivers.

Maya on the other hand, was running like a champ.

Maybe a few are getting lucky and getting games to run alright, but I was always under the impression that the OpenGL extensions in the FireGL drivers were not meant, or optimized for gaming applications at all. The focus of the driversets are on opposite ends of the scale.

Then again maybe I'm wrong and I'm the only one that couldn't get an OGL game to work afterwards

I asked the russian guy who invented this mod, and he said from the start that games would be slower.

This driver is only for CAD and other professional OpenGL software.

What makes me wonder, though, if they can accelarate CAD software so much, why can't they do it in games?

Although I'm thinking what's optimised most is the geometry performance, texture operations are slower. They must somehow use texturing units for geometry stuff.

Okay I *just* read (or attempted to) the article posted. I skimmed it earlier, and I didn't see any part that mentioned any gaming benches.

The only bench they showed SpecViewPerf, a professional CAD/DCC benchmark.... how'd you figure games into it?

btw, this RivaTuner news is in the archives. Check Jan 30, 2002
