Default Support for 3-D Stereo Vision Shutter Glasses

Does anyone know if ATi will have support for 3-D glasses like the kind available from eDimensional?

Getting them to work under winXP and 9700PRO is a living nightmare. NVidia has built-in driver support for Stereo Vision.... will ATi come around and show us their support?

Is this driver-only dependant or does it have to be a hardcoded feature on the card?

Thanks for replying...

It needs drivers, it's not hardware dependent. My guess it's pretty low priority for ATI, although it would be a nice application of the power of a 9700.

Default you kiddin?

have you ever actually put on those stupid glasses? they are totally useless and in the realm of awe-struck noobs. I had tried them on and after the first two minutes of 'gee thats slightly cool' they were off my head and back to real gaming.
There is no way anyone would play games with those annoying glasses on their head. it dont even look real

I don't think I've read a whole lot of positive comments about it. It's mostly a try once, get bored and forget about it feature.

Sorry to disagree HUMUS...

Now that I finally got my eDimensional I can really say that ANYONE who says this thing is dumb or useless must be out of his mind, never really tried it, or didnt have the right gear cause this is AWESOME. Yes right now the support is VERY limited for my Radeon (no OPEN GL) but they told me the driver coming up in 2 weeks is supposed to fix open gl support. It is unfortunate that ATI dont have stereo drivers since everyone should be able to experience this. Heck, I find myself playing older games and having a blast with the new world that this opens. I was playing Driver, Need for speed high stakes and other oldies. Another good point is that it can force resolutions not originaly supported in games. Unfortunately they (edimensional) trie to hard to sell you an Nvidia card instead of delivering the goods and fixing their ati support. I still have hopes in the new drivers because it will be a shame to see this glasses go..heck I think that my next sentence really shows how this things are. They are so good that I am even considering moving to Nvidia if they dont fix ATI support!!!! Believe I hate nvidiot as much as anyone but the effect is to emersive to miss. Give any of these glasses a REAL try and youll will never come back.
Regards

PS I aint blaming ati for the lack of stereo drivers since it is Edimensional's responsability to makes this thing work and their advertised ATI support is VERY deceiving but anyway it will be nice for ati to finally deliver stereo drivers

Here is the link where I bought mine:

http://www.edimensional.com

Keep in mind that ATI support is VERY limited so you may want to wait for the new drivers (about 2 weeks) before buying since I am posting a review as soon as I find out if the new drivers fix the Open GL thing.

Default if you think it sucks you just havent tried it

Humus - has it been a few years since you tried it? There were some serious issues with the first gen of these; interlacing and low refresh being almost unbearable.

I first got to check out the last gen of stuff at E32000. They had sports illustrated 3d swim suit video going. mm.

So I went and bought myself some 3D Revelator's for my GF3 a few years back and loved them. With my monitor set to 120hz at 1024 or 1280 res, games looked superb. No more interlacing. The built in support from Nvidia is also pretty cool - I am still waiting for an official response ATI .

And now my revelators gather dust. If ATI doesnt have stereo support by the time NV30 is out, I might just have to switch back .. :| (it really is that cool).

Racing games are by far the best use case for these things. That and a FF wheel and its better than any arcade. (All you'd need now is the moving carriage..)

They are fun in FPS but only SP IMO. Its a bit too much visually for MP fragfests .

I have to agree though WATANEN though ; everyone I show these to is impressed and wants them for their own!

/Mas

I just picked Need for speed high stakes for $9.95 (currently playing a demo) and boy it is AWESOME everyone must try this for sure. My uncle tried them today and couldnt believe his eyes unfortunately he almost cried when I told him that his LCD monitor wont work with the glasses! lol

Hey Shaolin95 - I wasn't able to find any mention of ATi support on their site.

Do they have their drivers available for download somewhere - the only thing I found was to Wicked3D which aint around anymore...

Anyways, cheers.

Default 3D Monitors

Philips and a few other manufactures are working on 3D monitors. With this technology 3D glasses would become obsolete. From what I’ve read anyone looking at the monitor would see true 3D. Has something to do with multiple guns shooting at different layers or angles. I don’t know how much they would cost but that would be cool.

Here is a link to Philips Research .

I wrote a program use the wicked 3d opengl drivers in xp. The driver I had worked fine, but it just did not see the games. I made something to just copy the file(and show where the file is copied) and change a few registry settings. Let me know if you want it.

no way you cannot dislike these glasses!

OK you are entitled to your opinion. But I have to say that if you dont like 'em, perhaps yer trying them in the wrong application. Racing games are a perfect example. Most FPS are not. Of course, if yer not a racing game fan, that helps you little.

You can already buy stereoscopic monitors. They are, essentially two screens that are only visible from slightly different angles, so when you look at the monitor (from the center) each eye gets its own screen. (kinda like those pictures that change as you change your vieweing angle). It looks like what Philips is designing is a lot more user friendly... Go Philips!

http://www.stereoimaging.com/3-D_Displays.html has a few links to various types of 3d technology, including some currently available monitors.

I'd still rather have a VR headset than a 3d monitor .. but then the eye strain might be unbearable.

Cheers,

/Mas

Just got an email from EDimensional. They said to email ATI and ask for support. They also said they (EDimensional) are working on thirdparty drivers and asked if I would like to beta test (I said yes, duh!).

Sorry to burst your bobble but take a look at the last email the sent me:

" Yeah, the first drivers will do a good job with openGL. The problem is
I haven't heard back from the programmers. I'm not sure what's going
on just yet but we are still waiting to hear back. I think someone at
Rage3d should look in to building drivers as well. If you know some
people over there I think it will be good to contact them and find out
what they can do. We have a guy who is an openGL specialist but there
should be talented people at rage3d as well. I'm not sure what to tell
you, I have to just wait to hear back from this guy, there's nothing
else we can do at this point but wait."

Now do a little search in this forum and you will find similiar answer regarding the "coming soon" drivers. Nuff said mine are coming back to them.

Hehe, I've had these glasses for over a year, I haven't been able to use them since the time I bought the 8500, they work like a champ on the first Radeon as I remember. Anyways, hopefully they come out quick with those new drivers. My 9700 pro need them!

And PLEASE ATI support the shutter glasses!!!

Just adding my vote - this is definitely a feature that would make the best use of the raw power of the 9700PRO. I would love to play F12002 using these shades

Regarding d3d yes it does work with most racing games at least with my Radeon 64. Porsche and High Stakes really roc! I just tried them on my new G4 Ti440 (yes I bought one just for the glasses shame on me) and WOW. SOF2 is simply amazing as is RTCW. You really live in the game I tell you the first time you see itis a jaw dropper and after that it still amazing. Heck, I get kill a lot because I get caught admiring the place! One thing I noticed is that I used to have hiccups with the Edimensional glasses but NOT with the X3D glasses...keep that in mind.
The thing is that the Nvidia's stereo drivers has LOTS of features that you dont get with the wicked 3d drivers like "page flipping' which looks much cleaner than "interleave" technique not to mention that there is no need to adjust the horizontal position of the image likie you must do with the wicked drivers. Plus with Nvidias drivers I get to "expand" the images a lot more thus creating a wider world. Ive never like any gimmicks to hamper my games but this IS for real guys. Trust me after 24 years using computers it is hard to impress me this much, i feel like a kid with this new toy. Best piece of technology I have right now or at lest the most immersive.
Regards

PS Test drive 5 works with the wicked but NOT with Nvidia;'s drivers. I will soon post my reviews for both the edimensional and X3D glasses. ALso Hot persuit 2 doesnt work with either drivers at the moment.

I posted on the catalyst crew asking for support, but the recent interview with that Ben guy (head of ATI software) doesn't make me too hopeful. He doesn't seem to think there is a significant market for it, I hope he relents. Everybody please fill out the catalyst crew form asking for support (couldn't they come up with a better name? I feel like a tool saying catalyst crew).
