I'll just rip this from one of the 3 or 4 posts i've already done on it in the driver forum.

To make the Catalyst drivers work with GTA3 you need to use Rage3D Tweak to disable the Table fog and Z fog registry entries (and make sure W-Buffer is disabled). This will make GTA3 playable with the new drivers.

spread the word.

To manually edit the registry and accomplish the fix, you need to find and edit the following registry entries in the ATI registry keys.

ExportWBuffer = 0 (can make this change in ATI control panel)
ZFogEnable = 0
WFogEnable = 0
TableFogEnable = 0

If you can't find them in your registry (particularly relating to Windows XP), then use Rage3D Tweak to make the changes.

Exclamation

This is also necessary for MORROWIND (just the disable Table Fog bit). It looks like Table Fog must be enabled by default in the 7.72/7.73 drivers.

Like Yoey says you have to reboot for it to take effect (in XP at least).

I wouldnt say you have done something wrong because I am also still getting the horrible fog after the tweaks. If you guys could please double check your settings and get back to us it would be appreciated. Are you guys waiting for it to become late night? Thats when the fog gets at its worst.

I installed the new Catalyst drivers and have the fog problem as well. All the 'solutions' here tell me to install the new R3D to fix. The new R3D just crashes my computer after install until I boot in safe mode and uninstall it. So, how do I apply these tweaks WITHOUT using R3D?? Using 8500DV, Win2K. Thanks.

Hi! I'm using Catalyst drivers and the tweaks did not work for me. But I found an alternative setting that some of you can try: W-Buffer enabled, Table Fog enabled, W & Z Fog disabled. I had a savegame that always started with this fog, but with these settings it's finally working, at least on my rig. Sorry to the last poster, I also used the Rage-Tweaker.

If you have W-Buffer on, your performance will be much worse in GTA3.

You are right, Ichneumon (of course you are ! ). I was just happy it worked, so I left W-Buffer enabled. Right now, only TableFog is enabled, and the three other settings mentioned before are disabled, and it still works with better performance.

Most of the slow down problems people are having is likely due to sound. Make sure that you have Miles 2D audio selected and have the dynamic sound mapping turned off.

W-buffer on/off made no difference for me on my system. I also had no fog problems using the W98 Omega drivers as well as older driver sets. Maybe the best fix is just to downgrade to an older driver when you play this game.

well, i found that after turning on the Z fog.. it isn't super-foggy during the weather condition.... but the super fog effect still shows up when it's early in the morning, night-fog, etc. well, we just gotta let ATI know about this one :\ it never happened to me in the 6071's...

I do. I notice it build up. I'll be playing for 30minutes and then it'll just start chopping and hanging every few seconds. But at that time I'm already bored and shut it off. Those guys who made this game are geniouses, but they sure are ignorant when it comes to problems. Thats the problem with ports, unlike playstation where no patches are need/possible and there is only one hardware configuration. The PC version has to try and work with millions of configured systems, so far I appluad GTA3 for the compatibility, buy I hate them for thinking that a patch is out of the question and completley unneeded.
