Default DX10 Titles that really show off the DX10 enhancements ?

Hi,

Just really started using Win7 and I am looking for a game or 2 to show off DX10 (DX11 Dirt 2 came with card so will try that when its released) - Any suggestions as so far I can't tell the difference when I had my HD3850 apart from the new card is fast and I can have AA enabled on all games so far.

I own:

Crysis / Crysis Warhead
Fallout 3
Cod series (DX9 lol I know)
GRID
DIRT
FSX
ArmAII
Batman
...most new titles especially FPS's.

Any suggestions ? As I feel I have moved to Win 7 and nothing apart from OS GUI has changed.

Dx10 can provide more FPS with the same complex scenes. And thats where it usually ends.

Visually, 99.9% of what is possible in DX9 is possible in DX10. Microsoft rushed and forced DX10 out early just so they could have an extra marketing tool to sell Vista. DX's progression was way better back in the day before Microsoft decided to start using it as a marketing tool to sell a new OS, back when a new Windows OS did not necessarily mean a new DX was bundled with it.

Of course there are technical improvements in DX10, adjustments to the pipeline, a few limits were raised etc - but they don't always translate into visuals, but efficiency which takes place behind the scenes.

And lastly, it's no surprise that the "DX10" visual goodies in some games were discovered to be normal DX9 functions which were only locked out in the in-game menu's but worked perfectly fine when edited in an ini or hacked into the game. Probably for marketing reasons, or money hats, or just being a straight console port. Like it or not DX9 is going to still be the mainstream game development platform for the next couple years, primarily due to the consoles.

In Lost Planet, DX10 enhances the look of the fur on your coat outline. Other than that...

Directx 10 was mainly about making the popular flashy effects of this gen easier to implement. You aren't going to see much better graphics or a huge fps increase. Best you can hope for is shortened development times and thus more time for effort to be put in.

My understanding is that DX11 has far more of the "jumps" people were expecting, but I havn't gotten my mits on the SDK or any DX11 hardware yet.

Bioshock does however enable rather attractive water wakes, higher resolution depth shadows and soft particle edges when you turn on directx 10. Might be worth a look.

I believe nVidia were the ones who pressured Microsoft into downgrading the spec of DX10...?

Might not be as convenient as it's an online game but DX10 makes Lord of the Rings Online look fantastic. You can download the free trial to check it out if you're just looking to take some comparison shots or whatever.

Ok, thanks for the info and ideas. I have FC2 so will load that up too. I will check out the Rage thread about Conan to see if that worth putting on.

Fc2 does not really look any different in dx10 though, it just runs faster with aa enabled.

Any time you can have great visuals that play faster when you enable AA that counts as a showpiece for me.

Run the unigine tropics demo in 10 and 10.1, look at the differences (esp with AA cranked up, for FPS) and the unigine heaven demo.

Sadly, of the few DX10 games I've played, I think Lost Planet still shows the greatest apparent difference between DX9 and DX10.

In every other game the enhancements are so subtle that they're barely noticable during actual gameplay.

I have to agree, Crysis shows way more of a difference between dx9 and dx10 than Lost Planet.

All LP had added was some extra fur on a coat and a few more foot steps added in the snow....sounds laughable and me being facetious but google it. I'm not lying!

It does. I think the "ultra" settings are the DX10 settings.

I don't consider that since most of it can be enabled in DX9-mode (and run better!) via config files. About the only thing that can't is some tone-mapping and that's not all that obvious.

If you want to see true dx10 effects them Stalker clear sky and Futuremark game Shattered Horizon are the best games for that. Farcry 2 runs better in dx10 even if the effects aren't different.

my warhead dx10 has deeper colors over dx9, dunno if tweaks can fix dx9

but more importantly, another thing that can only be done in crysis dx10 is per object motion blur

well i think Crysis is the poster child for DX10, it looks absolutely gorcious.

World in Conflict is also another gorcious game in DX10 (the sunrays, water & cloud effects are insane!)

run fraps on DoW, if it's black behind the numbers, it's dx10
