What to do with a PS2 with a bad drive?

I was given one. Mine has a HD, but it still needs to run the DVD once to load the HDLoader.

Any ideas for a way to use the PS2 w/o the DVD?

If you felt so mechanically inclined you could buy a replacement drive and install it yourself.

then again, it may be cheaper/easier to just get a new PS2

I have no idea if the PS2 can be used without it

HDLoader is too good to pass. If you still play PS2 games, fix it.

There are also some modchips that allow loading code from the HD or Memory Card, making the drive unnecessary, but I think you'll need to use the drive for the initial installation.

buy a used or broken ps2 and get the drive out of it?

I have a PS2 sitting in my closet.. was my brothers.. they were getting the common disc read error and went to take the ps3 apart, pulled the ribbon cable thats connected to the top apart, took it to me to fix it.. but it hasnt been touched in 3 or 4 years..

Will it just not read disk anymore or is the drive totally toast. If it just stopped reading disk replacing the laser is very easy. Have done is several times my self. Just check to see what model it is there are several places to get new lasers or I have used ebay with great success.
